Viva Las Vegas!

Okay, I just candled. I tossed 5 clears/early quitters. There are at least 2 others that I think are doubtful. Casino is such a good mom that 5-8 chicks sounds like a much better deal for her anyways. I don't want to give her more than she can reasonably care for.

Unfortunately, I don't know who's eggs are who's cuz when Marley broke dad took all the eggs under her and just put them right under Casino w/out marking them. A few are still recognizable though.

Oh, yeah! I promised some pictures!

I thought I'd let you see what Casino looks like right now...

... Only she's in a nest on eggs, not on a plate probably soon to be served with eggs! This is of course not my image, just one I found on google, but the resemblance is uncanny!

She is totally pancaked on those eggs!

My first hatchling for June! This one came out of a cream colored egg so I think its mama is maybe my RIR? or Maybe BR? But Daddy is a BCM. I have 4 more pips!

Hey everyone!

I'm soooo excited to see a Las Vegas thread!!!! Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

re: the CLUCK TOUR... last time I spoke with Leslie ( a couple months ago) she was NOT planning to do a CLUCK tour - too much work for her...

Maybe we should do our own just amongst our BackYard Chicken "family" to get to know each other? Any ideas??? I have met some great folks on Leslie's CLUCK Tour and learned a lot from them too...

Have a great day all!

My June Hatch is going a lot better than I expected. I had set 22 eggs had 6 candle clear which left me 16 going into lockdown. Of those 16 only 4 looked good to me the others were just dark but I left em just in case. So far I have 5 in the brooder 1 just hatched and another has pipped. This hatch was really just to see if my new BCM roo was coin his job, I had got rid of all of my adult roos back in late February. That left me with two BCM roos that had been hatched out in December so were still juveniles. Late in April one of them started crowing so I waited till mid May and gave it a shot. I have 6 black babies so I guess MY BCM has been getting busy!

My bet is on the BR. If it has a white dot on its head it should be a boy, if not, girl! That cross is sex-linked cuz the copper in the BCM and the silver in the BR, unless one or the other is not pure and something else crops up. Congrats on the hatch! It's always a way better sign for it all to be dark ... something is filling that space! Cute chickie!

Thanks so much for the info on the CLUCK tour, or rather the lack of a tour! It would be fun to have a get together sometime. I'd prefer it to be after the extreeeeeeme heat of the summer is waning though! Also, I'm going out of town until school starts again in August, I think. I will be here occasionally, but gone for the most part. I will be on here though so you'll all have to keep me updated on what's happening in Vegas.

LV-Bird-Lover what part of town do you live in, East, West, elsewhere .....? We also want to know what breeds of birds you have and how long you've been "chickening." What's your story?

Do you guys think I should make a list of LV folks that have posted on here and their basic area on the first post as a reference?

Editing to add....Broody Mama Drama!

I had a new broody sitting on the favorite nest tonight. No, not Marley, it was Widget. Widget is an EE x White Leghorn or Delaware cross. I'm sure the dad was a non-standard Ameraucana or in other words and EE, but the mom is a mystery to me. She has green legs, lays a cream colored egg, has a straight floppy comb, is white with grey flecks throughout and has the body shape of a Leghorn. But...she's broody so maybe she is part Del instead of WL. IDK *shrug*

I think I'll block her nest, let her sit on wooden eggs for a few days and then try to move her into a carrier. If she's not serious, moving her will break her. We leave Thursday night so I don't have time for her to fool around! Sooooo tempting to see what chicks the feedstores have in stock....

This is Widget.

I set these 20 eggs May 13th to see if my new BCM roo was doing his job. As you can see from the egg colors the hens were all different breeds from Buff Cochins to Easter Eggers.

This is what hatched this weekend. Eleven Fluffy Butts that look just like their BCM daddy did at that age. Boy those BCM genes must be strong!

Sorry I have been gone for a bit with a sick Meg still..

MuckMuck the little bantam we got to keep our sole silkie who hatched looks just like your chicks (just smaller) thinking its a bcm bantam.

So for the Meg drama, she stopped eating again but now I think she has wry neck or crooked neck or stargazer they are all the same right?
so been making the dough again and opening her beak and putting the dough ball inside and she swallows. I thought the pretnazone was helping but doesn't seem to make a difference.
Ive been adding 400iu of vit e oil and selenium to the dough to see if that would help. Any ideas? but she is still with us so i guess that's good right?

The swamp cooler didn't help as much as i thought they kinda avoided it. If i see a big unit on craigslist for the right price i might pick one up and set the fan to low see if they prefer that.

How is everyone else?

I don't know much about wry neck but a fellow BYCer has some good info on her blog along with a video of a chick that had it and was treated. I will post the link. Good luck with Meg.

Wow! Yeah, I'd say the BCM genes are dominating this hatch. You will probably have some cheeky ones though, from your EE's. Plus, a 50%+ hatch rate is not bad, either!
