Viva Las Vegas!

#2, the one with the prolapsed vent didn't make it.

Along with the 3 that survived yesterday I had one more successfully hatch last night. The remaining 2 were fully formed but never pipped and were dead when Karen performed her eggtopsy. I still haven't got managing the humidity figured out with my Brinsea.

Muckmuck: Cute Barnv. chicks. Did you get the eggs from Nor-Cal?

Ditto on the sentiments about cuteness being the Darwinian factor of youth...seems to apply to all except insects.

Ke_ben: What are splash turkeys? Is it what happens when two blues breed? I hadn't heard of that one before.... Is it a derivation of calicos?

Blue slate turkeys produce just like blue chickens...blue, black, and splash or slate. I think that some call them self-blue or lavenders. Check out feathersite http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Turkeys/BRKSlate.html

Our trio was at the CC fair along with a few of the chickens also.

I been trying to catch an egg eater for the last couple of weeks. I had some success today!
I caught this black sex-link red handed, or yellow beaked, in a nest box with a freshly pecked egg! Now I gotta hope she hasn't taught too many others her dirty little tricks!

Good luck with that. I swear I have one (at least) but have never caught them at it. I do get a few weak shelled eggs now and then so that may be the problem. Congrats with the Barnevelder hatch! Sorry about the one who didn't make it. I hate that.

I haven't been on in almost 2 weeks cuz of our family reunion. We wore ourselves out getting ready for it and it's almost over. Whew! I feel like I need a vacation from my so called vacation.

Chickens are doing great. Production is up and chicks are growing like weeds.

There is a huge wildfire raging on Cedar Mtn. close to where we are. We have been choking down smoke and brushing ash off of everything since Sunday. It has already burned over 8,000 acres. Scary.

So, pictures were promised. This is the summer setup. The coop. The windows are nestboxes except the through and throughs here. I really wanna get a poop hammock for this and have already gotten rid of the field fencing on top in favor of more netting. I also intend to switch out the feeders with trigger feeders to minimize wild birds getting my feed.

These are old rabbit hutches that we are using as broody boxes. Open during the day and closed at night. There is a whole lot of rabbit brush in the run which the chickens love. They use it for shade and protection as well as for food.

I ended up putting the field fencing around the strawberry pot feeder to keep the big chickens out of the chick feed. It's non-medicated but they act like it's crack or something. This way the littlies have a safe place to eat and drink. Here's Casino and here brood. She still manages to squeeze in sometimes which is fine by me. Notice the branch in the background?

The branch is a favorite too. Here's 5 of Casino's 9 babies. I'm pretty sure that at least 5 are boys, 3 of which are pictured here.

The chickens also really love it under the hutches.

Finally they got the wildfire 100% contained. Here are some pics taken the first few days when the smoke was the worst. It started on the 1st and the pics begin with the evening of the 1st from our side yard.

Looking South down Highway 89 on the 2nd of July.

Along with visible falling ash we had a really weird orangy glow all around. I love this photo of our family tree, most of the nieces and nephews with the monkey's uncle, my youngest brother. They were encouraging the passing diesels to honk by pumping their arms up and down. I did it when I was young too. I love all the action and reaction in this photo! Check out the baby...and his 2 older brothers!

The rising moon on the 3rd of July...and my aunts trailer. It was quickly covered by an ash cloud so I couldn't try again.

ke_ben: Congrats on the turkey hatch. I meant to say that before but forgot. How was the Clark County fair? Where are the photos from that? Any new baby goats?

Max: Any photos of your barnvelder chicks?

My chicks are all growing like crazy.

I have a new broody, or maybe an old one as she was the first broody this year and is ready to go again. I'm so excited because for the first time I can try to hatch out my own chickens eggs. It's so hard to choose what to put under her. I went with mostly Marans eggs (both roos are Marans) a few blue EE eggs, a couple green EE eggs and a couple light browns. It will be interesting to see what happens. I set them tonight. So excited!

I'm afraid to ask how hot it was in Las Vegas today...it was pretty warm here and muggy with lots of clouds but no rain.

Sounds like a send up to a joke..."How hot is it?"

Yesterday we in LV tied a heat record at 114. At 11:00 it was still 104 outside. Woke up this morning to a tepid 94 degrees.

Moisture (well, humidity) scheduled for Thursday and Friday here with temps bouncing downwards.

How's everybody's chickens doing in the heat?

Looks like a fun family reunion there in UT!

The news here said Mesquite was 117* so I was sure Vegas was HOT! Oddly enough, they never tell how hot Vegas is on the nightly news here. I think its a conspiracy....someone's made a deal to keep the true temp a secret so people will still go there.

Hope you do get some real measurable moisture this week then. We keep getting lots of clouds and can see it raining all around but we've hardly gotten a drop.

We had about 15 minutes of heavy rain this evening on the East Side, it's gonna be a muggy day tomorrow!

These are my two Barney Babies.
