Warning: Graphic URGENT: predator got in coop, killed 2 chickens and injured 2 others

Make sure you keep the injured eye flushed with normal saline and antibiotic ointment applied. Yes, you can use triple antibiotic in the eye itself. If she won't hold still put some on your finger and rub it gently over her eye. her body temperature will melt it and it will run into her eye.

If you have any oral antibiotics on hand such as terramycin (I have Terra Vet on hand) that you can mix with her water, it would be prudent to cover her with that, especially if her eye is showing infection.

I have roosters who have lost an eye to fighting and they get around perfectly well. Like mentioned, chickens are very resilient animals and with support and TLC can recover from some pretty devastating wounds.

I was worried more about the blood on her head. She didn't sustain a puncture wound in her skull did she?

I am so sorry for your loss and the trauma to your hens. Be warned. If you have a raccoon, it will be back. It now knows where the all you can eat chicken buffet is now that he's sampled the menu. Time to Fort Knox your coop/run and get out a live trap. I'd hate for you to loose more birds to this predator.:hugs

I thought about putting the ointment on her eye but on the label it said not to put in eyes and I was afraid that I'd make it worse. Are you sure it's okay? (I'm sorry I just wanna be extra sure) Unfortunately don't have any oral antibiotics on hand but I can possibly get some if it's sold at my local feed store. It's encouraging to hear that chickens can live mostly normally with one eye. About the wound on her head, I really don't know. I was really concerned about it too but I'm not sure if it punctured her skull. I would assume it probably didn't because she's doing okay and it's scabbed up.
Thank you for your concern. :) Measures have been taken to secure the coop so hopefully the raccoon can't get back in. :fl

Yes, I am sure. Make sure you don't use the one with pain killer on it. Just smear it over the closed eyelid and let it melt. Some of it will go into her eye. Bacitracin ointment is the best but in a pinch, triple will work. I've never been able to get it directly into the eye but it will work it's way in if you just smear it on the lids..

It's what I have used on my roosters and while they have healed blind, they have healed.

Okay, thank you. I'll try it then.
