Anyway, What works best for the deep litter system? I am considering buying some bails of hay cheap to try. I want to do a deep litter system to prevent some of the smell from the chickens. I know chickens stink, although if i didn't have chickens i'd be spreading chicken poop in my back yard anyway because my grass was dieing.

I know leaves from trees work great in the fall, but those all rotted and i need more litter to put down. I don't have access to sawdust and sawdust sets off my asthma horribly. Will hay/straw work for a deep litter system?

Do no use hay. It will compact and turn into adobe. I have had great success with two different types of litter; pine shavings and wood pellets.

It's 10 if you get written consent (which i have) personally I feel if you even plan to have 1 you should get written consent from the neighbors in case they later get a stick up their butt and start complaining about the chickens.

Ord. 28085 Ex. A; passed Aug 28,2012
You are allowed 6 ADULT poultry AND 6 pigeons unless you: (1) had 10 birds prior to Sept 10, 2012, he/she may keep those excess poultry until July 1, 2015; or you have written consent from neighbors. No roosters. Coop setback is 12 ft, and coops bigger than 200sq ft require a building permit. It states in TMC 5.30.005-A: "Poultry is defined as domestic fowl raised for meat or eggs, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, or geese."

This is where my "What's an adult chicken, legally?" question came from.

A year? Two years? 6 months?!

x2 on the hay- it's a mess. I made that mistake and have been changing to pine shavings- much nicer. The girsl have been doing an awesome job tilling everything up!

An adult either crows or lays eggs. Wish they would allow roosters. I hate not having one and roosters aren't nearly as loud as the neighbors dog that barks 24/7.
I know they define them that way but animal control says no turkeys or roosters. And my neighbors being iffy on it... If they call AC after AC already said no turkeys I'd be in trouble. It would be a hard battle to fight.

x3 Pine shavings are $7 at Del's for a compact bag that expands to 12 cu ft.
the problem with the saw dust or pine shavings is it causes me to be unable to breath. I tried it for nests and i couldn't go get the eggs or feed the chickens because of it. I had to have my husband dump the sawdust in the yard waste and put it at the road for me.
For whatever reason hay doesn't set off my asthma. I'm also thinking grass clippings? I can ask neighbors on each side for their grass clippings as well. and weeds from their flower gardens.
I wish I could cope with being allergic to wood chips/shavings.

As for pellets, wouldn't the chickens eat them? I feed a mix of all stock and layer pellets. Anything in pellet form would look like food to my chickens.
