I was comparing notes with the amazing ZGoatlady this evening at Coastal's chicken talk. Of course, there were many people with black coats and brown purses, but I figured it was her because I knew she would be running late, like I was. There were lots of folks there- probably 40 or more? Neither of us won the door prize, but we got coupons for $5 off a sack of feed, for your first 4 bags. It seems Zgoatlady also likes to scrounge around at the Goodwill at 4-corners, so I was bragging about this wooden "cannister" I found last night- have to show you my $2.50 find!!!- a nice lathed wooden vessel. (Maple?). I'd guess it's 1940's, looking at the lid, but unsure- might be as late as 1960's. I'm a sucker for solid/heavy wood implements and furniture.
I'm so glad you gave me that nudge to go tonight, it was really Good to meet you and your very nice husband. So I guess I might have to try one of those nipple waters, thinking a light would keep it from freezing. freezing. Guess I won't worry about it till it's made..:D I love your find I have a great place for it. :lau

I'm also planning on mounting my brooder lamp I don't use over the new nipple waterer next winter to keep it from freezing. I'll use a thermostatic cube to turn it in and off.

Just checking in to say "Hi". I haven't read nearly 800 posts.

The science experiment eggs went into lockdown. Two in the "turned" incubator appear to be viable. One in the "not-turned" incubator also appears to be viable, but is very small. It may be too weak to hatch. At first I called it an early death, then we saw it move. Now my kid thinks it is amazing that our "dead chick is moving". Silly boy.

I had the pleasure of stopping by and seeing the Chicken Rustler and his sweet wife on the way back from Seaside. I'm jealous. His chicken runs are about the size of my back yard. Now I'm thinking maybe I should just put netting over the entire back yard. But, I doubt DH would go for that idea. LOL. I did learn some new ideas that I hope to put into place here at my house.

Yesterday, I had a wonderful visit with FireWifeJess and her kids. Our kids ran their sillies out at a park and Jessica and I got to catch up and chat.

Well, I'm tired and trying to hold off a migraine, so I'm out of here. I did want to post the update about lockdown. Hopefully I'll be able to post pictures of three cute (and, please be healthy

) fuzzy butts in the next few days. It was difficult to wrap my brain around this being a science experiment and, in essence, we were possibly causing a problem for any chicks in the "not-turned" incubator. There's a bit of relief knowing that many of the eggs in the properly turned incubator weren't viable either.

Also, I was talking to the proprietor of Iron Horse Hay and Feed in Maple Valley earlier today.

Her chicks are $2.99, and she offers a great deal: buy 5, get one free. That comes to $2.50 a chick in case ya need the chicken math done

Her first shipment is RIR, sex links, BR, and Buffs.

You might want to go "like" her store on Facebook and check it out if you are in the area. She's not a gigantic Walmart-sized store, it's just her, hubby, and 1 or 2 part time employees, (and 2 adorable kids) but they get the job done. VERY hard workin folks. When I came down with the weird virus that attacked my knee joints in December, she even offered to deliver stuff to me.

What watt bulb would I need in the brooder lamp to keep the nipple waterer from freezing?

I would guess you could use a lower watt bulb, but if it is in the coop, it won't be very likely to freeze. And, if it does, since you are using a bucket with nipples, it would be easy to pull out and get working again. My nipples are attached to a PVC pipe, and a buck drains to it. Not so easy to remove. Even in that coldest freeze, the top of the water and the sides of the bucket froze, but the water inside, the drain hose, the PVC pipe and the nipples did not with exception of one of the coldest days.

It will be in the run. Still, less than 3 weeks worth of days that I need to worry about, but the light would be nice ;)
