Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello, all!

The snake talk is creeping me out! I'm from the Mojave Desert, and I was raised to stay away from snakes, as pretty much everything in the desert has venom, stickers, or both. Our yard has a bumper crop of harmless ribbon snakes, and even though I know they're perfectly safe, I cringe when the kids handle them! Early training trumps logic.

My big news is WE GOT A DOG! I'm a dog person to the core, but we haven't had one for years. We opted for a cardigan welsh corgi (the corgi WITH a tail...) She's a year old, so we bypassed some of the more irritating puppy behaviors. She was sold as a pup to a breeder as a show prospect, but she didn't quite grow out to show quality. Fine by me! I want a buddy, an obedience dog, and maybe later agility, so a couple minor cosmetic faults make no difference. This is my girl, Maddie!

She has herding bloodlines, and it's come out in her in spades. She herds cats, children, and chickens with no intent to harm any of them. (NOT that we let her out with the chickens unattended...)

Nice to be back in the chicken forum!

What a beautiful dog! So lucky that her herding instincts are strong. Our Pem definitely has more of the ratter instincts in her, but she's terrified of the chickens because they bully her. I hope we get to see more of Maddie!

Hey Nikki1, nice to have you back, I was wondering where you wandered off to for so long. Congrats on the cute little dog.
Are you going to Monroe next Saturday?

Yeah, not so much. The following week is parent/teacher conference week, so I'll probably be holed up in my classroom all day Saturday getting everything ready. At least I'll have company. I'd bet every teacher in our building will be there doing the same. We all share very high expectations for everything, but we have about zero in the prep time column. Oh well!

Sounds like everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather yesterday and even learn a new way to boil FRESH eggs.  btw, I sent that to another chicken friend... she tried it and said it worked perfectly for her, too.

I was able to clean the freebie dog house and it really looks great.  There were a couple of broken pieces of siding near the top that will be great vents as soon as I put hardware cloth over them.  Now I just need a perch inside and a door.  Easy Peasy since DH is such a great "get 'er done" kinda fella!  :hugs

Also prepped a couple of planting bed and got seeds in for spinach, kale, and rainbow chard.  I haven't planted chard before and don't know if I'll like it, but I'm sure the chickens will!  A lot of the greens I grow are mostly for the chickens... my BFF thinks I'm a little nuts even though she has more chickens than I do.

We had a little bit of a boo boo with the chicks Friday night.  I was in the other room, talking to Ciscoe Morris on tv, and DH found a chick dangling by her foot from the chicken wire lid on the brooder!  Yikes!  By the time I got back in the room he'd rescued her and gotten different wire (1/2" hardware cloth) to make a new lid.  She's totally ok, not even a scratch, but DH almost had a heart attack!  It will be time to move them to the dog kennel in the garage pretty soon.  But I really like having them in the laundry room.  I love hearing them in there all day!!!  It will be way too quiet when they're out in the garage.

Yesterday afternoon I took a couple of them outdoors to play in the dirt for a few minutes, in a nice warm protected corner.  One kept trying to eat rocks the size of a large pea!  Silly girl?   I was worried they would get cold so it was a short outing, only about 5 minutes!

Well, I'd better get going, I'm feeling very lazy today.  I think it's the time change.  I like longer days but hate the lost hour.
Have a great day everybody!

Sounds like you got a lot done,I love those kind of days.
Glad to here your Peep made it ok.
So here's my suggestion on it being to quiet when the chicks go outside.
BUY MORE PEEPS! What do mean you neighbor has more then you? Oh my you need to go back and get more babies and FILL up the laundry room with tiny, chirpy little PEEPS!! Sorry I went all Chicken math there for a minute. I'm good now! Lol
It will be hard but if it gets to quiet we're here for ya!

I got 5 silkie hens that I am selling. Asking $10 for each. These are pet quality but they all have the correct number of toes. 2 black, 2 blue and one splash. They are pretty young in the photos. I will be posting them on craigs list on monday.

I'm going to be making some GF muffins for the show, but I've only ever baked a GF thing once years ago. Any recommendations in terms of flour? Is Bob's Red Mill good?
