you're so lucky, I don't get any greens. Only whites and browns. I wanted to have some chickens to lay greens and blues. But well, I'm on a limit of how many i can own and I cannot give up who i currently have despite having 1 more then the law allows already and keeping 2 of my chicks as well instead of giving them all to my mom like i'd planned.

@Chickielady - are you going to Monroe? I'll have to do some looking to find the information. Although, I think I'll be in the middle of hatching - wouldn't want to miss that

Woman I have hatches every 5 days round the month until the end of March (so far)
I worry NOT about it...as far as I have learned...they do well without me pearing in.
IF there are lallygaggers stuck by the time I get home after the show...I may or may not help them out.
Hatches do not keep me home.
I have seen so many................and my equipment is doing it's job...trial runs are doing great.

YES I am going to the show, provided I can get my keester out of bed early!!!!!!!!!

i will be hatching some BCM in three weeks...they are Helen Byer's lines...and maybe some Blue Marans as well.

I have read many positive comments regarding using Hog Fuel in runs - just wondering before I purchase a yard or two if anyone had any negative experiences with it?
All the folks I know who have used it for their livestock say it works great...as long as you have the capibilities to haul it in & distribute it.
Take a tractor.................hard to shovel by hand, but once distributed it works well by keeping the birds OFF the mud & wetness.
Hard on Horses though, it can pack the hooves so badly it is hard to pick it out.
OK for Cows & goats.
I guess it depends on the size of the chunks.

Here is a cute story...Maxwell, a Blue Copper Rooster that I got from Robin (on this forum) has his harem of about 15 hens and they free range in a pasture with a pond. The have a 10 x 10 kennel coop, covered and closed up at night. I am in the barn and hear him shrieking so I dash out. A raven landed on the gate and he got his hens back into the kennel and stood at the door. The raven wanted in the run to snag a bagel. He hopped down and started to enter the kennel. I couldn't see what exactly happened as the kennel was in the way (and the sides are covered)....then a huge fuss and the raven flies off...a little crooked....I go to see what happened and Maxwell has a raven feather in his mouth and several black feathers on the ground.

He is quite the good rooster!

The hens are totally unconcerned and eating the bagel.

Good thing that the actual breeds don't matter much to me then. I just want a friendly chicken that lays eggs.
Some of the best-est & friendliest birds I have are either pure Marans or Marans & Ameraucana crosses called Olive Eggers, which are a Marans X Ameraucana.
The end result is an Olive green egg...and a robust heavy hen as well.
This is a cross.........called an OE
The other cross is called an easter egger....(EE)..............and that is a cross of a light brown layer (your choice) crossed with an ameraucana.
The result is a light green egg.
Both are crosses, both are extremly good layers, beautiful birds with a never ending color wheel of eggs.
