Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Sad news- we lost our big boss hen, Scarecrow, today.

Just up and keeled over. They were all fine last night when I put them to bed, and then when I went out to fill their water late morning she was dead on the floor. We did a (very) brief inspection of the body, and her cloaca was enlarged without looking inflamed, which leads me to think she became egg-bound. But we're new to chickens, and they're only 7 months old, so I'm far from an expert. I do know they were all vaccinated for Marek's, so at least I know it's not that. This is our first (and hopefully last, at leaast for a while) death

SO sorry for your loss: :hugs

does anyone near north tacoma have fertile eggs they are willing to give away? I want to incubate some chicken eggs of any breed preferably EE's but anything right now.
I usually hatch eggs every year but this year my source of fertile eggs is gone. My moms rooster died.
I do have chicks right now in my brooder but can set up another brooder :)

Duck Drover - what type of ducks are you raising?

I raise Australian Spotted ducks and Call ducks. It is my Spots that are laying everywhere and I have fertile eggs developing in the incubator so I will have ducklings soon. The Call duck eggs do better incubated by my Silkies so they are penned with them, that way the Silkie hens can go broody when the Call ducks are laying in the nest box but they have not started laying yet.

I have a few EE x (they're blue but will hatch olive eggers) but you'd have to come pick them up in Olympia. I gave a few to Hanna in Oly for her broody hen... Should be hatching this weekend if she set them that day and they're not duds.

Hey Washingtonians - I have chicks hatching this weekend and this is the first time we've done this... I need to vaccinate them for Marek's Disease and am having a hard time finding a place to buy this... any suggestions? I live in Maple Valley (Western WA). Thanks!!

and yes, I know I should have known/dealt with this already... my bad

I've only been able to get it through the mail...Jeffers...but I had to buy enough to dose a LOT of chicks and it doesn't keep. Best bet is to see if someone else has some and vaccinate the same day...but the window of when to do it is really small too...I vaccinated for it one year but haven't had to do it since...that was four or five years ago.
