Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Sad news- we lost our big boss hen, Scarecrow, today.

Just up and keeled over. They were all fine last night when I put them to bed, and then when I went out to fill their water late morning she was dead on the floor. We did a (very) brief inspection of the body, and her cloaca was enlarged without looking inflamed, which leads me to think she became egg-bound. But we're new to chickens, and they're only 7 months old, so I'm far from an expert. I do know they were all vaccinated for Marek's, so at least I know it's not that. This is our first (and hopefully last, at leaast for a while) death

That happens here every so often, and is a sudden death, when no symptoms were seen prior to finding the bird dead as you did, I always suspect a crash landing.
I have seen several crash landings happen, and the bird flies off the roost & hits the wall or face plants and usually the neck is broken.
Sorry for your loss !

oh also still no muscovy eggs. Not sure what is up with them. Can't force them to lay for me though. Hoping to get them to start laying soon.
We have had Muskovies laying for several weeks now, and actually have 2 hens setting on what looks to be 15+ eggs each.
These are my neighbors birds, actually not my own.
I have 2 doz of his eggs in my incubator for 3 weeks now...all fertile.
Maybe you have males & no hens ?

Hey Washingtonians - I have chicks hatching this weekend and this is the first time we've done this... I need to vaccinate them for Marek's Disease and am having a hard time finding a place to buy this... any suggestions? I live in Maple Valley (Western WA). Thanks!!

and yes, I know I should have known/dealt with this already... my bad
Come to the Monroe show on March 15 and see Jean at the Ameraucana table...she sells vaccine.
It needs to be kept cold, so bring an ice chest.
Vaccinating birds after they hatch is fine.
It can be more difficultas they grow larger, and they can be more exposed to the virus as they grow older, which is why it is recommended you vaccinate day old babies.
But any age chicken can be vaccinated.

70+ mph winds overnight here~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is a good day to be a duck !!!!!!!

we did not loose power & all incubators & brooders are doing well.
I did drag the gas can & generator and all the extension cords up there anyways.....hope the rest of you hatching did not loose power !

I went last year and yep they had a horse show to. I spent most of my time with the quilts.
I just finished bringing my sewing machine, ironing board & the rest of my quilt stuff up to the loft of the barn house.
Einstein set up a big melamine table, and lamp overhead...I am almost in quilt mode again first time in 3 years..

I just got done quilting this one, which was sewn about 6 years ago !

Ah come on...there has to be more quilter's & chicken folk out there than this...which so far today is me...................and Cheri.... where is everybody ?

I'm a quilter! Have you tried primitive rug hooking with wool? You might like that too! You can buy wool skirts at thrift stores and cut the into strip to hooking into special linen.

Oh by the way I am new to the group and I just got baby chicks last weekend, I live north of Seattle.
