Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Robin, that laughing chicken is funny looking and sounding compared to what most of us are used to. Not much meat on the bones. The chickens like that are the example I think for rubber chickens. Just a guess...

comfrey sends out EXTREMLY deep tap roots like 30 feet or something I read....... part of why they are soo good for fertilizer because they bring all those deep minerials up with those roots

OK that answered my question !
I do have this hillside to deal with.I suppose if I turned the clump loose on the hillside it would help soil retention ?
Or is it not worth it for the envasiveness of the plant ?
Your Easter babies are DARLING !!!!

I had not read much about the comfrey roots being so long…My information is from experience……i try to dig it out…..it shoots down and to the sides and every which way…..Even though i have not planted it in the garden it is coming up everywhere. The difference to me between vines like Mint and Ivy and blackberries even crabgrass, they are rooted on the top one foot of ground give or take….so you can spade them out eventually….Comfrey roots go far beyond and may never be removed except maybe by some plant poison.

Maybe speak with someone at the extension office or some online research for your hillside…..id plant a variety of mint first….

WOW that's amazing!!!!!

ChickieLady... you might want to look at periwinkle (vinca minor or vinca major) for the hillside. It is almost as bad as mint, but will eventually "learn" where you don't want it. It is evergreen, so looks good in winter. It will grow in almost any soil and really does not care about Sun or shade. And directgardening.com has 100 of them for $12. Oh, forgot, has pretty blue flowers all spring and sometimes in summer.

I thought of it because I am waiting for MY order of it to arrive. I am covering my parking strip (why do you call something a "parking strip" that is illegal to park on?) with it. I refuse to mow that patch of grass I never use!

I was simply stating a fact! Lol

I am just happy because I found a place to order old fashioned snapdragon seeds. The kind that are 3 foot tall. Hard to do a proper cottage garden when they keep "improving" everything to be miniature!

Caught in a few down pours yesterday, but stuck it out so I could take my time planting the last few today. Should be better today anyhow!
Anyone have plants or flowers they grow for their chooks?

I've heard nasturtium and marigolds are good. I'd like to plant them around the coop area to pretty it up and give them something they will enjoy. Any suggestions welcomed!

I had Vinca before, and while at first it was rather pretty, it went everywhere, up walls, over fences, into the carport & under the car.
It was next to impossible to get rid of !
Eventually we starved it dry, ran over it with the lawn mower 2-3X a week, and finally sprayed with weed killer.
Even after all that, a sprout would appear every so often.
Never again Vinca or Ivy !
I'll keep the Comfrey in the wine barrel, water holes are drilled in the sides, so I can see if the roots are escaping.
The mint will go on under the porches, under each exterior door, to keep ants & bugs away.
I will keep looking for a good non-invasive hillside retainer.
maybe I need Stumpfarmer here to give advice, she is a plant expert, seriously.
