Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Do not post outside this thread. You have now been completely ignored twice, once while asking a rather legitimate question... and now have been reminded why you moved 3000 miles away from Upstate NY where you were raised. Jeppers!

Hey don't take it personally! There are a couple of threads where the people are pretty snobby about their "special" lines of chicken. It might be better to be ignored than get a response that is a total put down. A little while a go someone asked for an opinion about her "Roo" and the only answer she got was that the APA doesn't recognize "roo" as a word and they are cockerels. The OP simply said she was going back to a friendlier thread where people are nice. All the other readers supported the rude poster because he's an "expert" in his field. Still no reason to ignore people or be rude.

Yep, this weather sucks! Rain rain and more rain. When summer finally arrives it will seem more beautiful after surviving months of clouds, mud and rain.

It's been raining here, too. I talked with a friend in southeastern Oregon today and told them it was raining here again...they wanted me to send the rain to them. I sure wish I could, they really need the moisture. I saw my babies out briefly during the sprinkles...I don't know if they came out just to come out or if they heard me talking to my husband and they came out to see me (don't I wish).

Would you settle for: they came out because they heard you and mistook the patter of raindrops for the sound of particularly yummy scratch hitting the ground?

Hello all! Very new chicken mama here and I have a question. How far away should a roost be away from the nesting boxes? There are two in our coop, one of which is about 6-8" in front of the nest boxes. I'll include a picture where you can see the roost in front of the area where the boxes will be (external),
Sorry for the sideways picture!
It should be far enough away so their droppings do not land in the nest box.
Chickens also turn around in the night, and make alot of poo, so guesstimate from your bird's bum to their feet....in both directions, forward & back, otherwise therir tails get munched, especially the cockerels.
Mine are about 18" from the wall, the poop trays are that width, twice, as shown here:

Nests are below.
NOTE: If you have heavy breeds, make sure the roost to floor distance is not too great, or they can injure their feet when dropping to the floor, and get "Bumble foot"

Poop trays hold sand, and droppings can be collected with a cat pan spoon & collected in a 5-gal bucket.
Keeps things very nice & clean.

Quote: It was raining so hard yesterday that I "forgot" to give the chickens their scratch grains. When I went out last night to lock up the coop I was bombarded by a dozen or so disgruntled chickens demanding scratch! LOL I fed them in the barn so they didn't have to go outside and get wet just before bedtime.

I'm thinking you're going to have a lot of poop land in those nest boxes. I would prefer a foot. And remember that they will roost on the highest point so you may get some that prefer the top of the nest boxes or even the front lip as it *appears* to be the the same height as the roost. (But the pic may not be accurate in that respect.)

You all realize that our "winter" here was warmer than our "spring" is now ?!?!

I gotta run to the PO & pick up more eggs.

Note to self: No more drinking wine & surfing the e-bay auctions!

What are you getting CL?

And to answer a question from earlier.... I do spend time with the RIR littles and they will eat out of my hand, but they are quite timid. They certainly know the sound of scratch being shaken in its container and are quick to come running, but just as quick to spook at the slightest movement. Silly things. I've heard other people say they have chickens that don't like squash, or fruit, or this or that. These are the first I've had that are that way too. Scratch yes, fruit & veggies no way. I assume they'll get on board when they're in with the hens next month.
