Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

At least I didn't lose a hen, so he did his job. The big rooster had the main flock in a tight group under an apple tree and was crowing away. I wish he could tell me what it was
I too sometimes wish my chickens could speak to me and tell me they're every little problems and wants, and dreams. They were probably holding a memorial sermon/service, crows and ravens do it. Speaking of them, I have a large raven who hangs out near my yard and flock, he flies by my window in the morning sometimes and calls to me, and sometimes I call back as well! .

We have many crows around as well, and I swear one of them called out to me the other morning when I was giving the hens grub treats. I know others have trouble with egg stealing, but the crows seem pretty okay at our property. They make a mess eating the figs, and they will go after freshly planted corn and beans if I don't cover them. Otherwise they are good guard against flying predators. They are part of the alert squad when eagles are cruising around.

How awesome! :D They are so so smart, and very intelligent too! :)

My raven never show's his face to me, I did see him in a tree out one of my windows one morning.... he's very sneaky.

Morning Smudge poor guy is in full molt but he still protects them.. I only keep the one rooster anymore ..
have maybe 20 hens.. Will be really happy when the silkie grow up

I have 2 adult silkie roosters at moment. They live in separate pens, but I often let them out in the courtyard. I do have a small fence separating the courtyard but even if I forget to close the gate they don't fight.

I'm hoping the young boys learn from watching them

I am still not wanting a rooster up there not sure whay maybe because no rooster get one more hen right ..
I technically could put 8 .. That would be too crowded in the tractor their way out.
Will keep it 5 or 6 most.

Ive only been to a couple shows and then because of issues I didn't really breed for a few years and my roosters got too old. I have new blood to revitalize the flock.

I selected for temperament on my roosters for years though. Silkies are more laid back anyway.

My flock rooster with the large fowl is half silkie. He is nice to people even if he's super paranoid. That paranoia means he keeps a very good eye on the hens. He is cautious of getting within arms reach of me (i like to snuggle him) but will walk up to hubby and take treats from his hand. However he respects me. One of the younger rooster came at me aggressively and Leven rushed over to kick his butt. I turn around and chase and grab aggressive roosters and force them to submit so they generally get to terrified to try again. Doesn't help that Leven will peck them once I get them in the submissive position.
