Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My hens weren't fazed by the loud booms last night. I think there's enough regular gunfire in my area that they're used to that sort of noise. They laid 5 eggs today so I guess they didn't get too wound up.

Garden's looking good except for two cauliflower plants. They wilt when it hits 80, the collards and kale seem to like the heat. I think cauliflower is more of a fall crop anyway. The shade I put over the pea vines is helping keep them from overheating.

It's supposed to get near 100 degrees Monday and Tuesday and I expect it'll actually break 100. I have two frozen whole zucchinis that I'll give the girls to help them chill out.

Yup. Regular gunfire around here and we can hear artillery from base sometimes. None of my animals even paid attention. Cats, dogs, chickens. All ignored.

I have a dog obsessed with helicopters and motorcycles. He wants to race them. Couldn't care less about cars and trucks.

It's 92 degrees here at 4:15 PM. Need to go check the chickens, though I'm sure they're fine. They have a relatively cool place to hang out behind the shop.

I signed up for Walmart+ today since there was a 50% off deal, $49 instead of $98 for a year. They started delivering to my area recently which is good. I'll definitely save more than 49 bucks a year on gas.

Free Paramount+ comes with it too, and I got it set up on my Fire Stick TV. Hope there are some new Star Trek episodes I haven't seen yet.

@Smokerbill you seem to be the master gardener in the area, so I'm sure you know this already. I don't grow cauliflower because of the space it takes, but when I did I learned that tying the leaves closed around the cauliflower when it begins to form will protect it from the heat in summer. Seemed to work for mine, but honestly all veggie garden activities are experiments here.

I'll give that a try if/when heads begin to form. I was also thinking about shading the two plants with floating row cover to block some of the sunshine. Thanks for the tip!

If things don't work out, I know that the chickens would love eating the cauliflower leaves.
