Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

On a positive note the remaining six chickens each laid an egg today, and none were eaten!

I let a wild blackberry vine grow out of control under my back deck this year, so I crawled under the deck and cleared it all out. Tossed it in the woods out back.

It's a hard thing to do. As you know, we had to do it this year too, for the same reason. The second one that came down with ascites, we treated differently, and just made her more comfortable by draining the fluid, until she passed on her own. I preferred the latter, as she didn't seem to be suffering once we drained her, and died peacefully out in the run with the other girls.
I remember you posting that. I hope I don't have to deal with it again but if I do I might try draining it too.

They die anyway, but I didn't have the heart to put her down since she acted like she felt fine. Yours was acting very sick, so I think you did the right thing. I have syringes and needles if you ever need one. I bought a bunch of them for this girl.

Thank you Valerie. I really appreciate the offer.

Watered the garden this morning then loaded a 1/2 yard of fresh composted woodchips in the truck and dumped them in the chickens' day run. That should keep them happy for a while.
I might dump another load in the run later today.

I saw one of the girls find a treat in the pile of chips. I think it was a fat grub worm.

I just dumped a second load of rotted woodchips into the chicken run. They're really enjoy it! This time I saw a big nest of ant eggs as I was shoveling the chips in, a chicken delicacy!
