Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We're having this for lunch. It's a big favorite here and super easy, although time consuming. Hope y'all enjoy!

2 large white onions
1 cup olive oil
1 3/4 cup lentils, rinsed & drained
6 cups water
2 cups rice
1 tbsp salt

In large heavy- bottomed pot, heat oil. Slice onions into thin rings, sauté in oil until well browned. Remove pot from heat, transfer most of the onions to paper-towel lined plate to crisp. Add water & lentils to pot, stir over heat until boiling. Cover, turn down to low, simmer 20-25 mins. Add rice and salt, stir well, return to boil, cover & return to low heat to simmer another 15-20 min or til rice is done. Serve garnished with crisp onions and plain yogurt (it's good without yogurt too). Goes great with a garden salad or tomato/cucumber salad.

Quote: Yeah, I think it was some green mold. I am severely allergic to molds. Since these pallets came from a milk company, some do have mold. I have not yet treated the wood. It will before I paint is with Kilz. I have had 2 doses of Benedril and been putting the cream on it too. Improved by 50% so far.

Sounds yummy

Okay, so I have my first broody. My 9 month old buckeye spends all day in the nest box, and puffs up if you open the nest box door. While I was doing chores, I pulled her out and put her in the run. She seemed happy to get out and eat and drink, but then started prowling the run doing turkey tom imitations. (flared tail, poofed-out wings, etc.) The second I opened the pop door she scurried right back into the coop and into the nest box.

What should I do for her, if anything? We don't have a rooster, so letting her set would be less than productive...

Do you want to get her some chicks in a couple weeks? Buy hatching eggs? There's a lot of peeps here who would give you fertile eggs if you want them. I have a broody too, my 10mo BO, and I ordered her chicks. Will give them to her on the 12th. If you want to break her, you'll need a wire bottomed cage to make her less than comfortable and get the chilled air under her body to cool her down. Put feed/water in there and leave her there for a couple days. See how she does when you let her out; if she goes back to the nest, try again in the broody breaker (exclusively, don't let her out) for another 48 hours or so. If she's only been there one day and you get here into a cage soon, she should be broken within 2 days or so.

Nikki - Eric at Seattle Farm Supply has chicks coming in on the 26th or 27th of this month. That would be PERFECT timing to order them for your broody. He will have:
Silver Laced Wyandottes
Speckled Sussex
Partridge Rock
Black Sex Link
Black Jersey Giant

Hmm...

My knee-jerk reaction was that I don't need baby chicks (which is true), but I have a friend who wants to replace an elderly flock this spring. I'll have to talk to him. My pullet would save him having to set up a brooder, and my girl would be pretty happy. Plus, I could have the fun of chicks without having to build a new coop for a bunch of new chickens.

Oh, my. I think this is just another case of chicken math. The chicks wouldn't REALLY count, because I wouldn't be keeping them. It would be charity, really...

Just have your friend buy the chicks or eggs and give them to him when they're big enough not to need mama! Win-win!

Ohhhh, if your friend would take them for sure that would be the perfect plan and SO much fun!

He did great at Coastal today, too. I was very pleased. Stores that are quieter are easier for him to deal with. He was happy to be sitting on the couch in the heat of the fireplace at Coastal while I was shopping in the women's and kid's clothing section. He wants me to "buy" that fireplace. I wish!
