Marysville veteran gets ultimate gift

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — It’s the gift of life.

A 26-year-old Kansas woman is hoping to donate one of her kidneys to a Marysville veteran who is not a family member.

Frank Gibson,62, got the grim diagnosis of kidney cancer seven years ago when he was serving in Iraq. His job there was to diffuse insurgent bombs. But it’s his personal war with cancer that reminds him every day that life is fragile, Gibson said.

“There are many nights and days the pain was so bad she would hold me and whisper prayers in my ears,” said Gibson.

The cancer has since gone into remission, but so have his kidneys. Gibson undergoes five hours of kidney dialysis three times a week just to stay alive. And because none of his family members were a direct match, Gibson had accepted his life of pain. That is, until Renee Roberts of Wichita, Kan., reached out to him.

The two met during bomb training in the Air Force training years back. Gibson was the oldest in the class. Roberts was the youngest.

“Since I was so young and away from my family he was my father,” Roberts said.

They lost touch for a long time until last year when Roberts heard of her friend’s difficult life and offered one of her kidneys.

“I have two I only need one no one should die on dialysis,” Roberts said.

Even though the veteran initially refused her offer, Roberts went ahead on her own to see if she could become the cure. “I kind of went behind his back and did some of the testing,” she said.

As soon as she learned her kidney was compatible Roberts says she wasn’t taking no for answer.

“She said look if you don’t take my kidney I am going to give it to a stranger well what do you do with that,” Gibson said.

After a year of constant communication and built up anticipation, the mother of three flew in from Kansas on Sunday. The big transplant surgery is two days away. And the hope is Gibson will soon get his life back.

“The selfless act of giving somebody your kidney I’m amazed,” said Gibson.

And Greg, I love that you called me Jessie. Not many people can get away with that. The ONLY people I tolerate it from is my Grandma, and my aunts/uncles. And you.

Want to get the word out I am on the hunt for a quality Black Copper Marans rooster. Would like him to be between 6 months to a year. Good temperament, proper coloring, can have some red on chest but not much, no tail white, feathered legs, yellow eye, decent comb, good size etc, ya know! Just a decent roo and preferably known to have hatched from a VERY dark egg. Oh, and not purchased from me! I want to add new blood. If you have one available or know someone who does send me a PM. I am willing to drive about an hour or so from the Gig Harbor area. Thanks!

Here's BOTH of the cute bright blue eggs my "babies" started laying; I'm shocked they both laid their first egg on the same day, AWESOME!

Wow, those are gorgeous!! Congrats!!

This sweet little angel is amazing! She's only 8 years old!

Aww, that was incredible. I put it on fb for a friend who lost a baby just over a yr ago. Made me think of her right away.
Thanks for sharing.

I love you CarolynF.  Your quality of information is priceless and gives me a lot to mull over.

Cooking is quickly becoming a favourite hobby of mine.  I will definitely try this recipe.  It will be perfect for those cool, wet Northwest springs.

I'll check out the sex links.  I've seen lots of pictures and they look gorgeous!

I'm following your lead and going to look for local breeders and farmers, instead of the feed store.

I too would like to buy from local breeders & farmers. But the problem is, I don't know of anyone in Washington that raises Sex links or California whites.

Calif. whites DON'T seem to be too popular on BYC. BUT I highly recommend them. They are great layers of a big white egg (5-6 a week) and very very friendly. Mine wants to come in the house all the time.

Any body raise or know of anyone that raises Sex links  in Washington???   Monroe feed will have Both sex links & California whites in the spring

I've never heard of California Whites but you have my attention now! I'm going to have to look into these guys. I never thought I'd be interested in having chickens that lay white eggs but seeing pics of peoples brown, green, blue AND white eggs all together have me wanting just a few!

I'm so excited; I convinced DH to help me retrofit the coop fully on Saturday!!! It's actually in his schedule! We're gonna move/add roosts (and make them removable for easy cleaning), put up nest box curtains and make the nest box have 3 sections instead of 2 (right now I'm using a basket in the opposite end of the coop and the nest boxes, and half of them use the basket). Also gonna hang the feeder in the coop and find a place for a waterer (we have very limited indoor space, but I want those things inside to avoid rodents in the run). Lots of little projects but I'm so excited it will get done! Oh and we have to add a weather stripping on top of the nest box hinges to prevent water getting in there...it's a bit damp in the nests right now from all the heavy storms :(

We went last year for the first time.

He adds to it every year.

We talked with the owner who was a lot of fun.
He loves the joy his display brings to people he and his wife are great.
We had a great conversation.

That night it was raining so hard it was unbelievable but my Wife and I got out of the car anyways and he came out to greet us.

The others stayed in their cars.
You can listen to the show in your car if you desire my Wife and I though wanted to see everything better it's worth it to get out and hey we live in Washington get over it it rains here!

You can learn a lot at his website.

Just like chicken forums, display people have their forums also where they share tips and problems.

I find that to be so cool as they got a special place in their heart all that hard work to bring joy to the young and old all walks of life.
