Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

CoupleofZees - I just found two hens on Craigslist that came with a 50 pound bag of food. The whole package was $50. They are laying about 7 eggs a week. That might be a good way to go if you want to get some mature birds that need an upgrade. :) I'm very happy with my girls. They are healthy, friendly, and very entertainiing.

Hello Wonderful Washington Chicken Friends!!
I'm typically more of a voyeur on this site as I'm new and soaking up all the wisdom you all share!! I just moved to washington and I'm restarting my chicks (I had to leave my last flock in Utah with a friend)! I got 5 lovely chicks last week, and 6 more tonite. One of my sweet little ameraucanas has a little cut on beak
:( of course other noticed and pecked, so we isolated her, attempted to put a styptic mix to cover the red color and turned down the lights. She seems ok, for now in the dark, but if anyone has a suggestion I would surely appreciate it!!!
Thanks!!
Lisa

Hi. I am new to chickens. So new that I don't have any yet. We are almost done with the coop and run. I want to start with girls that are almost ready to lay, rather than chicks. What is the most common way to find that age range? I would prefer to buy locally rather than from an online hatchery. Any recommendations in the Rochester area? I lean towards Orpingtons, Barred Rock, Easter Eggers, Australorp, maybe Welsummer. Just going to use for eggs and entertainment. :)

You could try to PM Tailfeathers (Royce). I know he has Welsummers and Ameraucanas - he may have some pullets available or may know someone that does. It would be a bit of drive however. Also Kummer Poultry has some lovely Welsummers and he does sell pullets http://kummerpoultry.com/

Best of luck to you!

Hi Washington people! Do you have any recommendations on towns (rurals even better) that are good to move within an hour commuting distance of bellevue? Thanks!

I'm in Snohomish and LOVE it! We like to describe ourselves as off the grid in the middle of a city. We've got a little bit of land and when we are at home we feel like we are out in the country. But we are only 10-15 minutes to a down town city with shops. Maybe 30 minutes (give or take depending on traffic) from Bellevue from my place. =]

Thank you BGMatt and Ocho. I guess my main goal is to get birds that are coop ready. They don't necessarily need to be laying or close to it. Better way of stating it would be fully feathered? I've seen a place called Oates Backyard Birds here in Rochester. Does that seller have a presence here on BYC? Anyone have any reviews on them?

Hey Coop, I didn't see your reply. I will look into those two sources. Thanks!!

Here is our newest mouse kitty, she was wandering around moms house for weeks before we brought her home. Her name is Venus, she's older and quite large!
was she a stray or a neighbors cat? my neighbor's cat wanders all over my farm but I know he lives next door. No collar , no id or chip? Diane
She was a stray, had been. Living under moms porch and around her coop for a couple weeks. The neighbor lady said she was new as well. :). Gotta get her fixed soon, she's acting like she's in heat and more kitties is the last thing we want!

Hi There!

And Welcome aboard!
Boy do I have a great day for you!!! On Saturday the 26th there is a Poultry Swap in Rickreall, Oregon and there are going to be quite a lot of birds, supplies, crafts, etc. being offered for sale. There are about 80 booths in 2 barns at the Fairgrounds. You can learn more about it on their web page and their FB page. Search "Oregon Spring Poultry Swap". Even if you don't buy it should be a very entertaining day!

If you do choose to buy off CraigsList, please be very careful about checking for parasites, injuries, health, etc. There are a lot of hatchery birds sold from home, too. If you want good stock be sure to ask about the parentage. And if you can wait, BGMatt's suggestion of going to a show in the fall is a very good one. Check out Washington Feather Fanciers and PNPA for their show schedules. These shows are a wonder to behold especially if you've never been before.

There have been a lot of folks hatching in the past few weeks so over the next couple of months there will be more birds of the age you're looking for become available. Good Luck and Enjoy!

I was just told that Diane at the Feed Bin in Rochester is a very good source. That she deals only with breeders. It's a small feed store with great service. The Feed Bin....360-273-7440
