I love the look of the English Orpingtons! They are such beach balls! I already get such a kick out of my Chocolate Orpington and her build. Her name is Big Mamma but I mostly call her Mrs. Fuzzy Butt...I know, real mature.

I'm considering a Rooster...but a little nervous about it for my girls. Currently 9 of them are only 11 weeks old and my CO is just POL. I know she could handle it, but my babies? I don't know? It's about the same way I feel if I think a guy is looking at my 17 year old! LOL

I've never had an issue with roosters bothering girls who are too young. All my birds are raised with roosters and I've never had an issue. They don't pay the girls any attention until they start squatting and at that point they're ready.

Ok, well that makes me less nervous about it! My other concern is, as you know, we run the camp and I'm unsure how crowing at all hours of the day and night would go over with our guests! Our coop is very close to a couple of our large lodges.

One will crow, but that should be it. He won't let others crow (theoretically)

Wow, that's impressive. I only have two that will crow, but they're in separate pens. When I put them in one pen, the bigger one is the only one I hear

They will be fine provided a sheltered place, out of the rain & with out predators
I assume you have no floor in your coop ?
Try to, in the future, raise it up, apply footings & a floor, then you can have wood shavings or straw...each is good, and will then be dry

Thanks for the advice on wintering chickens here in Washington They are doing super during our cold snap! Last night I made them go inside their coop to sleep. It made me feel better, but honestly I think my two girls are just as happy sleeping on their roof, even in this cold!

I've got a question re moisture in our attached covered run: there is moisture (condensation?) on the underside of the wavy polycarbonate roofing I installed. We have had 10" of rain this month but not much in the last 7 days. The soil in the run feels wet to the touch though the sides are covered with plastic or have guttering on the eaves. Is the damp coming up from the ground, and what can I do to make the run more dry? Thanks for advice.

Is it a dirt ground? Is there runoff around the run that could be draining that way!
