and I still have the heat lamp on in the coop to help with some warmth at night.

Kill the heat lamp. It's a fire hazard and completely unnecessary in our temperatures for any healthy bird over 4, 5 weeks of age. Hell, I'm still wearing shorts... no reason a fully feathered bird needs supplemental heat.

And yes it's a cockerel, the crowing is the obvious give away, as is a massive red comb at this age.

Okay... like I said, I’m following this book because I didn’t know websites with real people about chickens existed until I was googling.
Good to know. I thought they’d freeze or something.. who knows.

I guess the next question is - can we get another baby, raise it separate until bigger and then introduce into the flock?
