Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Chickens got watermelon and cabbage today. Those are two things they get every week or two, not usually on the same day. I'm sure they won't touch the cabbage until tomorrow. They were all about the watermelon.

Been watching pierogi videos today. I've never had one, and the only way to try them is to make them, so here goes. I have it on the menu for next Tuesday.

Update on the doe getting into the chicken run and orchard. Even after raising the height of the fence to over 7', she still got over it. She is a big girl and motivated. Mike was out strengthening the area where she breeched it today. Hopefully next time it will stop her. I'm sure we'll know tomorrow. She is the only one who has ever gotten in. Frustrating.:duc

Hey all! Been a while since I have posted, we moved around a lot over the last 2 years. But we are back in our own home on property, got some ducklings at the end of May.....per usual with tsc they are all drakes.

So though all 4 are adorable, we can't keep 4 freeloaders lol wondering if anyone has some younger duck hens and if anyone wants any a drake or 2 😏 lol

I don't have ducks, but I hope you find a good home for them!

I hope the doe didn't do much damage to your garden. As dry as everything is out there a garden looks pretty tempting to the deer.

Not worried about the garden. Deer aren't getting in there. I think the raised beds are an obstacle to them. But the chickens have a free range area in our orchard and berry areas and that is where she is getting in. She has damaged the berries tremendously and eaten any low hanging fruit on trees. We won't get any kiwis from our Russian kiwi vines again. Haven't had them yet because she got them last year too. 😠 We are trying to fix it for future years at this point. Mike is getting quite serious about it. It's a challenge.

I made the peach preserves and repacked the Oregon grape jelly out of the old peanut butter/relish jars and into 8oz jelly jars.

I had to cut a jar rack out of some old wire rabbit cage flooring so I could use my big stock pot for sterilizing and water bathing the jars. Ended up with 3 peach, 6 Oregon grape and a little extra of each.

I went ahead and added some pectin powder and lemon juice since all the recipes seem to call for them.

Edit: Looks like only one of the nine jars failed to seal. I'll keep it in the fridge. Not too bad for the cheap Walmart brand jars and lids I guess.
