Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have had the flu shots for many years-some soreness at injection site for a couple of days. Never got the flu from it, and haven't had the flu since I started getting them.  I kinda miss it because when I used to get the flu, I'd lose a few pounds from not eating.Sure could use that now.

Had the shingles shot earlier in the year- some minor swelling& soreness in shoulder, and redness, no big deal.  Would have gotten the whooping cough shot but, discovered Medicare didn't cover it and it was expensive.

I am very imaginative, so I never read the side effects part of the info.  Otherwise I would conjure up every thing that could  possibly occur.  I figure I would certainly recognize a BAD reaction and get help for it.

Might I add I am a terrible wuss about shots, blood tests, etc. Used to faint at the sight of needles and scare the heck out of the nurses. Fortunately got over that.  Only had novacaine for extractions because I was more afraid of the needle than the pain of drilling cavities etc.  Realized late , that I was better off with the novacaine.  Funny tho how I go for the shots myself and  used to need a parent to drag me.  Guess I finally matured( my father would have said "manured") or something.  Still have 9 million other phobias but, try to tackle only one at a time.

I am not trying to downplay reactions that other people get.  We are all different and have different levels of sensitivity. Sometimes, especially if school age kids are in the family, you can be incubating flu before getting the shot or may have some other healthy situation going on that lessens the effectiveness of the vaccine. I mainly started getting the flu shot when my son started pre-school, hoping to prevent flu in my elderly parents- so the 3 of us went in together.   My son is an adult now and can get free shots at work but, won't go.

PS  One place oit here  is hyping the BIG dose flu shot for over 65. I asked my doctor about it and he said it wasn't any better, they are just trying to get more $$$$ out of you.

What I miss is having an excuse for laying down and watching videos for five days, but in general, since the last time I had the flu I ended up with bronchitus for a month, I'll take the shot.

I'm a wuss about needles, too, but since I have to test my blood glucose four times a day and take insulin three times, shots are sort of no big deal: at least somebody else is sticking the needle in!

I hope that next election there will be a technomagical way that when you fill out your ballot you get freed from campaign ads and political arguments.

I myself spent a lot of the last few hours watching a baby giraffe get born Poor mite hasn't quite stood up yet, that much leg takes a lot to get organized.

Hi everyone!!

New to this site and new to chickens.

I'm from Lynden, just bought a house here a year ago. I have two EEs and two Buff Orps in my backyard and they are so fun to watch! They are each 18 weeks old and I'm getting excited that I'm not to far away from getting fresh eggs (hopefully, that is!).

Glad to be part of this great community. I have learned a lot in a short period of time from you all!!

Welcome!!!

Howdy, and my those are pretty, pretty EEs.

Quote: My doctor suggested I should get the shingles vacine, but it's $200 at Group Health unless you're at least 60. I'll wait.

I asked my doctor, in June, about the Shingles Vaccine. He told me the same thing. He was happy to give it to me, and thought it was a good idea. But insurance won't cover the $200 until I hit 60. So I took the Tdap instead. lol. Shingles is pretty painful, thinking I'll just get it anyhow, when I go back in December.

I'm OK with blood draws, I kinda think it's neat to watch. A few weeks ago I went in and asked for some tests. OMG I didn't realise how much blood they needed. The nurse came in with a box of tubes. Asked me to hold them and hand them to her as needed.

Well first I would respectfully disagree with you. IMHO When it comes to kids in sports there are NO LOSERS just those who's skills are not as fine tuned for whatever reason. They ALL need to be encouraged and praised no matter how good or bad they are. Also I am a bit confused by your comment "I praise my DD and most of the others for getting up there and doing their best but the goal is to have fun, learn, and work as hard as you can to win or get to 1st place. " See first you say have fun, learn and work as hard as you can. But then comes the TO WIN !! IMHO IT should be less about the win. See Can't everybody be in the parade. Somebody has to be there to watch it go by. Otherwise it's just s traffic jam !!!

Thank you CR.

Having 2 boys who are not athletically gifted, the level of competition that has been brought into sports at such a young age has brought hurt that I never expected. We've invested hundreds of dollars, season after season, for our boys to be in soccer and Little League so they could learrn to play sports along with other children only to watch our boys be benched time and time again. We started them at age 4 when everyone else was starting them. Sports became so competitive by age 7 they started getting benched. Even worse, having to listen to mean parents yelling at my boys to "Stop running like a girl" or some other nasty thing was horrific. Let me tell you, I've heard it all. I finally found solice sitting with the opposing team because my blood would boil listening to people screaming at my boys who were doing the absolute best they could for their abilities. There was one situation where a couple kept screaming my son's name and yelling "This is running sport, not a walking sport" at my son on the soccer field because he wasn't able to run as fast as they'd like. After the game, I went to the coach and said she'd better do something, becaise if she didn't, momma bear was coming out and it would get ugly. Thankfully, she heard them screaming at my son through the game and did deal with it. Then he was benched the rest of the season.

I pulled our boys out of sports and the only sports we will allow them to play now is Upward - because it is honest, fair and supportive of all children in the league. I wish I could find a video I have of my son. ALL coaches were concerned because he had gone the entire season without making a single basket in a game. They did everything to help him. The last game they spent most of the game passing the ball to my son. Still no basket. The last few minutes of the last game, a boy from the opposing team stopped, turned to my son, threw him the ball and told him to run. My son was confused, but all the parents and both teams started screaming for him to run. Both teams backed away from the basket, making it easier for my son to make a shot and he made his very first basket just seconds before the buzzer rang. The entire gym was cheering for my son, parents and both teams. Let me tell you, that moment will live with me forever. I was so overwhelmed by what so many people did for my son I had to run into the sports closet because I could not contain the tears. That, to me, is true sportsmanship.

I agree. There's obviously so much more that's wrong with this darn world these days, but if kids can't even play games without getting upset that their losing team didn't get a trophy, they shouldn't be playing. Forget about self esteem. How about some good hard work!!! Hard work is what begets self esteem, not trophies for losing. Ugh.

I'm surprised you feel this way since you are such a proponent for Upward sports. That goes against everything that Upward sports teaches.
