I have had the flu shots for many years-some soreness at injection site for a couple of days. Never got the flu from it, and haven't had the flu since I started getting them. I kinda miss it because when I used to get the flu, I'd lose a few pounds from not eating.Sure could use that now.
Had the shingles shot earlier in the year- some minor swelling& soreness in shoulder, and redness, no big deal. Would have gotten the whooping cough shot but, discovered Medicare didn't cover it and it was expensive.
I am very imaginative, so I never read the side effects part of the info. Otherwise I would conjure up every thing that could possibly occur. I figure I would certainly recognize a BAD reaction and get help for it.
Might I add I am a terrible wuss about shots, blood tests, etc. Used to faint at the sight of needles and scare the heck out of the nurses. Fortunately got over that. Only had novacaine for extractions because I was more afraid of the needle than the pain of drilling cavities etc. Realized late , that I was better off with the novacaine. Funny tho how I go for the shots myself and used to need a parent to drag me. Guess I finally matured( my father would have said "manured") or something. Still have 9 million other phobias but, try to tackle only one at a time.
I am not trying to downplay reactions that other people get. We are all different and have different levels of sensitivity. Sometimes, especially if school age kids are in the family, you can be incubating flu before getting the shot or may have some other healthy situation going on that lessens the effectiveness of the vaccine. I mainly started getting the flu shot when my son started pre-school, hoping to prevent flu in my elderly parents- so the 3 of us went in together. My son is an adult now and can get free shots at work but, won't go.
PS One place oit here is hyping the BIG dose flu shot for over 65. I asked my doctor about it and he said it wasn't any better, they are just trying to get more $$$$ out of you.
What I miss is having an excuse for laying down and watching videos for five days, but in general, since the last time I had the flu I ended up with bronchitus for a month, I'll take the shot.
I'm a wuss about needles, too, but since I have to test my blood glucose four times a day and take insulin three times, shots are sort of no big deal: at least somebody else is sticking the needle in!
