Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I candled my 3 eggs under my BR broody this morning. Only 2 have chicks developing. The undeveloped one has a crack in the shell(should have candled before setting, oh well, learning lesson). It is so weird seeing a little blob moving around inside the egg. So hopefully come next Friday I will have up to 6 chicks under my broody(up to 4 silkies from Marge).

Well...can it be spring now?

OK, so DH does not like veggies and I usually put a lot in my cookin. As a result, he complains so I don't cook anymore. Just fix stuff for myself, and buy him the garbage he likes to reheat on his own. Well, made the mistake of buying Cambells soup CORN chowder for him and found it abandoned in the refir, so I didn't want to waste it. I sauteed garlic and Jalepenos and added that and some cheddar to the corn chowder! Heated it up, stirred it up and presto! awesome soup that didn't get thrown out! Mmmmm, yummy soup.

Look at this fabulous concoction - doesn't it look delicious? Could it be a wonderful Thanksgiving treat? Have I been baking today?
No
Nope, not baked by me - and I'm not saving it for Thanksgiving. It's a "Chookie", and it was given to me by a friend that I met for coffee this morning. She's directing "Little Shop of Horrors" at Tacoma Little Theatre this spring and I'll be stage managing the show. Her daughter is Chickadoodoo? who has posted here a few times, has a beautiful coop her Dad built for her and has 16 gorgeous birds purchased from BYC members.

As I left my girls this morning scratching for cracked corn in their run I was afraid they'd be bored. It was pouring rain and I knew they wouldn't be venturing far from the run. When I was presented with this lovely Chookie this morning I was thrilled. It is a HEAVY 8X8 treat and big enough that I can divide it into 4 squares, lock in my suet feeder hanging in the run and let the girls have at it for the rest of the week.

My friend was nice enough to not only share the treat with me, but also the recipe. Man, does she spoil her girls! She says when it's baking it smells good enough to eat, but considering that it's got layer crumble and cooked egg shells in it, we probably shouldn't partake.

"CHOOKIE" Flock Block

2 Cups flock raiser layer crumbles
2 Cups scratch
4 Cups rolled oats
1 Cup Omega Ultra Egg
1 Cup cornmeal
1 Cup cracked corn
1 Cup Sunflower Seeds
3/4 Cup wheat germ
1/2 Cup steel cut oats
1/2 Cup egg shells, crushed
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 apples, diced

4 eggs, beaten
1 Cup applesauce
2 Cups molasses
3 Cups lukewarm water
1/2 Cup oil (corn, sunflower, coconut)

Preheat oven to 300F. Grease 2 8X8 pans.

Mix all dry ingredients together in a very large bowl. In a smaller bowl with a wire whisk, mix together wet ingredients. Add wet to dry ingredients and mix well and let stand for 5 minutes. Test about 1/4 cup of mixture by squeezing in the palm of your hand. It should hold together in a small ball without squeezing out liquid. If needed add another 1/2 cup of crumbles.

Fill pans (use handle of wooden spoon to create hold for hanging if desired) and bake at 300F for 2 hours. Turn off oven and allow to cool in oven. Hang or place in run for fun time!
