I thought we might get lightning last night but we didn't.

here too - sounds like we have had our house parked under a pressure washer (metal roof makes for a real racket). I need to build a suspension bridge to the chicken coop. The new trail we built that was supposed to keep our shoes somewhat dry has failed. It held the water backon the lawn like a darn holds a lake, but sometime during the night, the lake topped the dam.

I ran out to the compost pile and the rain is not just heavy, but the drops are huge and coming down hard! My head felt like it was getting pummeled with ice pellets, but I stuck out my hand and saw nothing but rain. I then checked my cucumbers, and the leaves have been pummeled so hard, there is little more than the ribs left! U stripped it of the remaining cukes. I'll be having them for lunch in a few minutes.

It has been super windy too - I need to get those tarps ordered, I'm watching the chickens being blown around in their covered run, and it is in a relatively sheltered area of the yard!

I'm glad we got the tarps up this weekend. We ended up putting a 7' board upright in the middle of the coops, so the rain would run off. It looks a little funky, but it was free. The boards were in the garage.

We're trying to hold out turning the heat on until November .... I'm sooo chilly! I can't use the FP without setting off the fire alarms.

I got a letter from Germany that I am getting a small inheritance. I hope it is enough for a woodstove!

A woodstove/gas fireplace is another one of those things I'd love to have but there's no good place to put one (well, minus the west end of the kitchen, which is irrelevantly far from the rest of the house PLUS is where my orchids live).

What I would spend money on if I had it is a major rewire (I have insufficient 110 outlets and an absolutely unused 220 slot that would power an electric forced air heater), all new doors and windows, active skylights (I have three passive ones which are no help venting the house in summer), and enough solar electric and solar water heating to get us off the grid for half the year. And a roofed outside kitchen where I could install my sister's cast-off gas grill and have a source of hot water/ heated cast iron objects for the times of no electricity.

The ants carry them off for the sweet viscous coating on the seed.

Which reminds me, I have the Primula florindae seeds for you, assuming that they are perfect flowers and not male/female on different plants. Still can't figure out what happened to the columbine seed though.

Hi guys.
Been very busy- had a great weekend. Work threw a baby shower on Friday and a friend threw one on Sunday. Lots of things for Baby. Haven't had a chance to organize it yet. Great surprise was that DH found Hallerlake's address for an invite! Everything was a surprise to me... Well, besides date, time, & hosts. Turned out wonderfully.

When I was closing up the coop last night I didn't see one of our bantam Araucanas - figured she was hiding behind the broody and closed the door. Well, this am when I let them all out and was giving a little scratch out she comes from the bushes! Oops! Poor girl- don't know why she didn't come in last night but looked perfectly fine.

I've had a sick baby goat for about a week now. When the weather got bad, she got worse. It doesn't look like she's going to make it. She won't eat or drink, just lies in her bed. We have no idea what's wrong with her; the other goat is just fine.

Oh these animals - makes one so sad when things like this happen

My coop is not due to be done for another week, and my chickens are seriously getting too big for the brooder. They can stick their heads through the spaces in the metal shelves that I have covering it. Do you have any suggestions on what to do with them in the meantime?? I'm surprised they aren't attacking each other yet in that small space.

You are getting close! (Wish your hubby had had my address, too!)
What's with these chickens? Don't they know the weather is getting nasty?!
