Yay! What luck for me! I happen to have Fridays off. This could be dangerous. I hadn't meant to get chicks at all, but my local feed store on Whidbey Island had some in last Friday when I went to buy my big girls their feed. They offer 5 free chicks of my choice when I spend $25. Such a deal right? And the chicks are only $1.75 to begin with! I was floored. I'm used to the prices of the hatcheries plus factoring in the s + h, so this was a great deal.

I now have 14 and am building a nice official outdoor brooder box. This cold snap has slowed me down a bit, but until the nice set up is ready, they're fine in their cardboard box.

Thanks for the good word about Monroe. Ever been to the event there that I'm told is coming up on the 21st? I don't know quite what its about.

Does anyone know if chicken tractors can be brought to the Cascade Spring Show to be advertised for sale? I just started building and selling them and would love to have that kind of awesome chance to meet so many other chicken people!

I just picked up 2 of my 1st 4 girls at Monroe Feed. The people are nice and very helpful there. Being new at this we asked for advice and appreciated the information The chicks are well cared for. We will buy chicks from them again.
I heard about the event on 3/9/09 at Evergreen FG from Tailfeathers. He suggested for info and pretty much anything we might need, it was going to be the place to be.

Hi Everyone! I'm in Rice, near Colville WA (northeastern corner of the state). I'll be picking up my very first chicks on April 8th at the local feedstore. I ordered 3 RIR, 3BR, 4BO, 2WL, 2Ameracaunas, 2 Aracaunas. I"m really excited! Kristy

Very funny, but where did you hit hot? I spent the day with the heat up to 74 in the house.

Oh, That's right male menopuse is different. I need a hot car!!! (visualize Red Corvette)

Imp- shivering under blankets

Uh... *thinking*... In my car with the heater on full blast and a sweater and a Utilikilt hoodie on? Yeah, I was hot then, but too busy trying to see farther than 3 cars ahead of me to take the hoodie off. Besides, I knew once I reached my house it'd be 62-67 degrees. It always is. It used to be that if I was cold DH told me to put on another layer. Now HE'S the one trying to fiddle with it (I'm from Cali, he's a local boy) and I holler, "No! Don't touch that! Put another layer on!". Hahaha. Trained me well, he has!

Ok, just checking in. Off to my LAST DAY of Orientation. YAY! 3rd day and I think this is the most I've been to Tacoma in a single week... ever. I'm a homebody and I prefer driving in Kitsap. Still the same amount of crazy drivers, but we go slower!

Oh, and my Wheatens look horrible! It didn't look as bad when my other gals feathered out, but these birds look... Oy, faces only a hatcher could love. LOL.

WOW!! Kristy in WA, I lived in Rice for several years and most of my family live there now! Nobody ever knows where the hell I'm talking about when I say I grew up in Rice, and telling them its near Colville rarely helps either.

How long have you lived there? I lived there last about 17 years ago. What a great little town. And Daisy too! Ever go cliff-diving on the Columbia just outside Daisy? There's one spot in particular where the water gets really clear and you can see waaaaaay down, probably 50 feet or so. But then, that was back in the days when the river actually came to the banks. Last time I saw it, it was just a skinny trickle through a crackled mud flat that went on for hundreds of feet.

By the way, congrats on the new little chickies! What hatchery did they order with that you can actually get araucanas? I've been wanting one of those for a while but can only ever find the ameraucanas.

Good luck and enjoy!

I got mine from the Monroe Feed Store, on the highway JUST past the Fairgrounds. The Cenex Co-op in Snohomish on Lincoln and the Cenex Co-op in Everett. They didn't have any when I was in there but said they would in about a month. (3 weeks from now). I'd call them 1st, though.

I've never heard anything about a cliff jumping place, but we've only been here almost 2 years. The local feedstore is ordering from Privett Hatchery and Dunlap Hatchery. One is in Idaho, and the other is in New Mexico. I don't know if they are "pure" Aracaunas or not, and from all the info I've read here, they probably aren't. There is a gal in Washington (I saw her on the first page of this thread) that has true Araucanas. I checked out her website and it looks like she sells fertilized eggs, but not actual chicks. I'm pretty new to all of this, so that's about all I know! Kristy

No, I haven't.

Although my neighbor has offered to butcher them for me!

All three babies are still doing awesome--although one turned out to be BOY! So two girls & one boy. All are very sweet and Peaches may be bred back (at the new owner's request). I'm hoping they go to a good home!
