I didn't think Marans were approved yet in APA standard? If so, they can't win top bird, although they could win BV or BB, but not Ch of show.

I am not sure about that...but It may be some color variations are accepted (black copper and cuckoo) but not all the others, I am asking marans people now..

Can they be trained to lay other than WHITE EGGS ??? We are not allowed to have WHITE EGGS. Speaking of here is a funny story for ya all. I have been selling eggs to a friend and in the boxes are normally some of our green easter eggs. Well Steve had read the book "Green eggs and ham Sam I am" to his 3-4 yo grand daughter. Now She will not eat any eggs that are not green. So If I don't have green eggs for Steve he has to use food coloring to turn WHITE eggs green.

Thank goodness she does not only eat green ham !!!!!!!!!!!

well, more pips and peepers here over night, and it is day 20.
So it probably will be a cascade of peepers in the next 24-48 hours.

Chikielady- they must have meant that best of breed (marans) went to a cuckoo, because the CH of show was a white leghorn.

I have 25 pounds of chick starter, less a quart or two. I think its enough to last me for quite a while.

@ Justbugged Have you considered hydroponics in the greenhouse? If you have electricity to it. I have a small setup inside that I grow peppers and thyme, basil, and things like that. Also lettuce in. Google some hydro setups and its pretty cheap and easy to set up one yourself without buying one premade for a thousand dollars. Mine is made from a 4 inch pvc water main and an aquarium pump set on a timer.

Two of my sussex chicks never were able to stand up by themselves and their legs started going to teh sides even though they were never on anything slippery. They were more out to the front to start with. Havent had that happen before. One more was like that but managed to stand up straight in a day. I tried the spraddle leg treatment but they are not doing so well either way. They cant get around to get water and food, etc.

Suppose to be icky. Rare Feathers - be careful going over.

Thanks...we're actually staying in Portland until Sunday morning, more than likely...then we can take our time getting home. I have to pick up a trio of birds in Black Diamond, though...and Saturday, I'm going down to Holderread's to pick up some new sebbies.

Did you band-aid them? I've had spraddle a few times and never used anything slippery in the 'bator...you have to hobble them and leave them hobbled for a few days. They will learn how to hop around and eat/drink. But I always put the hobbled chick(s) by themselves so the "normal" ones don't pick on them...at least until the treatment is over.

I put them in a few small Rubbermaid tub with a 75 watt light bulb, and a small (shallow) container of water and a napkin with chick starter sprinkled on it.

This is the website I learned how to fix their legs on...it's best if you have someone to hold it while you apply the band-aid. At least with the Sussex chicks, you don't have feathered shanks to contend with...

This is what they were calling for while watching the news this morning. Grace Pena (the weather lady) was saying this. I believe snow by this weekend. Go check the weather....be careful on your trip.
