Not all school districts offer driver's ed. But to get your permit at 15, you have to be enrolled in Driver's Ed. If he's not going to take a Driver's Ed class, then he can't get his permit until he's older, I thought it was 15 1/2 or 16? Not 100% sure of the age, I just know it's later. DD is 15 1/2. Her high school doesn't offer Driver's Ed, so we are going to put her in a privately run program. She turned 15 last summer, but they didn't have openings until late October. Well I didn't want her starting out when it gets dark so early and with bad weather. I'm hoping to get her signed up in March after the days get longer and hopefully most of our bad weather has passed. It's a lot more expensive around here too, there were two programs close enought to be convenient and they were like $550 and $625. One of them is actually in town and she can take the school bus to her classes after school, so we are going with that one.
PS: You will probably want him to take driver's ed for the insurance discount. I hear it's huge for 16 yr old boys!
