The stuffed bell peppers were nearly hot through when we ate them last night. So they were still a very nice crunch when eaten. I am not sure that I will use canned peppers. The last time I canned peppers, I seem to think that I ended up throwing them out after moving them 4 or 5 times. I am a fairly decent cook, and they'll eat just about anything I cook. But I do know that I have some strong food likes and dislikes.
I am fairly certain that some of my problem with certain styles of food like stuffed peppers and stews is that I still have troubles with even looking at them. My mother wasn't the best cook, and her stuffed peppers were overcooked green peppers with hamburger and white rice. She did season the beef with onion, celery, plus Salt and Pepper. But that was it. It doesn't help that I have never liked onion. I now cook with onion, but I can dice it super fine. That way I don't get a mouthful of onion when eating it. I have also finally figured out that I dislike green peppers for stuffing. They cook and start to soften, before they are hot through. I found that the red and yellow peppers heat better, and retain their crunchiness. I also use brown rice or quinoa to stuff the peppers.
I don't even know how describe the stew growing up. I can hardly even look at stew. I know that I must make fairly good stew, because my family seems to love it, but sometimes I can't even bring myself to eat it. I can't remember ever liking a stew growing up. So I make them because I will make pot roast, so the leftovers always become stew the next day. DH is English by heritage, and he still likes the overcooked vegies and things like liver and onions.
He loves going to the Black Diamond Bakery for their meatloaf sandwich too. I should taste the meatloaf there someday and see if I can replicate it for DH. But I am not thrilled with meatloaf sandwiches. I think DH would eat anything put between slices of bread though.
My experience with pouring sauce over meat hasn't ever seemed to go well. I tried it with rabbit, and DH refused to even try some. I will have to think on this idea of cooking. The last year the guys had to butcher a bunny, because it had managed to paralyze it's self. We had to find a distant family friend to eat it. DS cried and DH was very cranky about having to butcher the bunny. My MiL said that the carcass looked like one of my Yorkies. That comment finally got to me. So for now no rabbit on the dinner table, but if things get worse, and I am really hungry, all bets are off about eating bunny.
I am sure that having not having been really hungry in my lifetime, that the things I would be willing to eat can still change. I find it interesting that I will try just about anything, but find that I really don't like as much as I wish I did.
