Water cleaning

I think a filter is probably not going to work well. Your going to need a massive expensive filter or its going to clog in a day.

Oh ye of little faith....I take that as a challenge. :) First of all, I have an electrical engineering background so I'm not completely clueless. Second, I am working with a manufacturer who makes submersible pumps, sediment pumps, vertical turbines, and motors. If anyone can meet my needs and make it reliable, it is them. Also, it HAS to be cost effective or there is no business model here. A de-icer costs $40-$60 MSRP. I'm thinking this waterer must come in around $50-$60 MSRP. If I can't make it work with this design, they might have a suggestion that would work.

But I'm not quitting because YOU don't think it will work. No offense.

Oh no I'm not trying to discourage you at all. On the contrary i was trying to be helpful. Idk what your experience with ducks is but you can do some research on how much filter a duck pond needs. Its ridiculous, an effective filter is something like half the water volume of the pond. If you can make some sort of magic self cleaning never frozen and always full water bucket i would buy one in a heartbeat. I just spent all winter hauling water so from where i sit $100 would not be to much. I get that your a smart person but I'm no dummy and believe me when i say i would be very impressed if you pulled this off.

I went down that rabbit hole a few times myself. I ended up using my pond as the source of water and teeing the return from the pump to their water bowl. I can vary the flow to flush out their bowl and to account for freezing In the winter. The excess water flows back into the pond where the pond filters handles the solids. @Ratchnick is correct that you would probably need to use a large filtration system to deal with the muck.

My system has to handle both what they bring in as well as the waste of their pond and the koi pond so perhaps a smaller system might work if it’s only dealing with their water bowl. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

edit to add that my total pond volume is ~2000g and handles 100% of the waste of 7 ducks.
