I keep water in my run and coop. Vertical nipples outside and horizontal inside.
Keeping the water up high on bricks works well too, I've never had any mess with that setup with normal waterers.

I do keep a drip tray under my horizontal nipples in the coop though.
Figured an ice tray would be easier to clear of ice in the winter.
