I sent an e-mail to the editor. It reads as follows:
Your newspaper has published an article regarding Sonia Farley and her desire to keep a chicken and a rabbit as pets. She filed for a permit and was denied. The article also stated that Ms Farley was not at the meeting discussing the matter and was not available for comment. I am a poultry enthusiast and know Ms Farley through this activity. It is my understanding that the public meeting was put together hastily, and Ms. Farley was not aware of it until after the meeting. Perhaps, your newspaper should do your community a service by publicizing the fact that these "public" meeting are not so public. I have also posted a comment on your web site regarding the story, however, it must not be approved because no comments are showing. Perhaps there are other comments similarly not posted. Not posting comments on your website gives the false impression to your readers that nobody cares and there is no other side to the story. Also, on your opinion page it appears that nothing has been posted on anything since last spring. I love to read small town newspapers from across the country, and find this rather odd.
I posted as well but did not have the foresight to save my post. Basically I said how will a chicken and rabbit, properly contained, keep children from going to school, and if somehow the rabbit and chicken both break into the school, would it be impossible for a staff member to remove them? I also said that chickens are tidier birds than cockatiels.
Probably not very well thought out but what the heck.
I also found it odd that comments are not visible! I know there must be a HEAP o' comments on this one!

Jody, good for you! That should get some attention if, as I suspect, this paper just doesn't have someone on their toes manning the website maintenance. I write for one of our state paper's blogs, and the editor there has his finger constantly on the pulse of the internet, which is really refreshing. If someone comments on a story, he responds almost instantaneously, and has other editors on staff who do the same.
I have never heard of ANYTHING more insane or STUPID!!!!!!!! Considering humans are NOT the only living species on the earth, how are children to learn love and tolerance of other living things if they are not exposed to them? I really worry about kids who never have any kind of a pet-I don't care what it is. I know of many parents who hate (those dirty) animals and their children are afraid of all of them-dogs, cats, birds fish.............Not a way to live or help this earth if you ask me! RANT RANT RANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
That article made absolutely no sense. It was a he said, she said they said kind of non-sense with no actual questions and answers that attached to each other! My mother used to teach english and creative writing. This so called 'writer' of the article would have gotten an F from my mom for just poor use of grammar, and never actually making any type of point! OH THE FRONT PAGE? The editor should be ashamed of him/herself for letting that get printed anywhere.
Of course, the topic of the article was just foolish. I'd be more concerned with a raccoon getting into a school or being around children, then I would of a pet chicken who is HARMLESS to say the least. It would only carry aviary diseases and nothing that a human would be able to catch. Do they plan on containing all the wild squirrels within 200 ft of school property??
Its outrageous these people call themselves reasonable.
They had some pretty big 'ones' to publish this like its nothing.
Edited to add: I sent me opinion in very large loud letters.... I doubt they'll miss that.
I just stumbled across this...What a steamy pile of splort!!!
If the animals are on the porch, next they could be in the school, Kerr said. I have a real strong concern permitting this to occur due to sanitary concerns and for the welfare of the children living there.
Unless the whole student body of both schools is using your yard and your house as a cut through to the schools, what point is he trying to make?
I happen to have a house chicken and she's not any worse than a dog or a cat or a parrot.
Lorenz said when he visited the house he didn't smell any foul odors and there was no animal waste in the yard. He also said the home's interior was clean.
