Weak Peahen, Can't walk without stumbling and toppling over.

Could this be one of those cases of a pea flying up and hitting the ceiling or a perch and injuring their back?
Is there anything like wood crossbars that she could have flown into?

I was thinking about that too.... but then I wondered, if the hen was too sick to eat, might she pass mucousy poo from lack of material for her digestive tract to process?

I'm also wondering about things which could affect her digestive tract, like something going on in her crop, or an obstruction, or eating a foreign object or bad critter... I am positively terrified of the possibility of secondary poisonings from rodent control, I'm always so afraid my dogs will eat a dying mouse...

It's a good sign that the poo was more normal today

I read something about tubing fluids that I had missed before about correcting dehydration... it says to tube fluids and to repeat in 60-90 minutes for best effects. The amount I tube to a full sized hen is 60-90ml. Of course I only give this much if the crop is empty, and I don't repeat if the crop does not clear.

I'm a visual person, so here are some pictures that might help others like me:

The hole at the back of the tongue is the entrance to the trachea - Nothing should ever go in there!

See the syringe? This is where the tube should enter:

Did you know that different birds have different shaped crops?

Pretty sure peas and chickens are either the second or third from the left, ducks are the one on the left, pigeons are fourth to the right and I have no idea what type of bird has one like the right most.

Kathy, the next time you try to claim you aren't an expert, I will start an ACTUAL poll

Do we have any pea diagrams, or are they "close enough" to the crops in chickens? Even though, as we all know, Peas are NOT CHICKENS

I have a chicken hen that I have to tube. Will maybe wet her feathers and take pictures before, during and after.

FWIW, tubed a pea hen this morning and actual length of tube inserted was 12", which left 4" hanging out of her mouth. That same tube in a medium bantam hen was inserted 6".

You all don't get all huffee with me but i have a young peahen i am going to process because she has a hatch defect and i don't want her in my breeding program nor anyone elses so i will provide a drawing of the pea crop when i check her innards and a photo if anyone is interested. i guess i can tie off the valves and fill it with air so we can see what it looks like full and i can do my drawing from that.

I'm all for it. This may sound morbid and insnsitive, but you could maybe euthanize, then fill her crop with water so we could see what a pea crop looks like full. Of course this won't work if euthanasia is removing the head. Sorry you have to her. {{{{{ hugs}}}}} -Kathy
