OK never mind the cake, what's on the BBQ? Chicken?

We had a fruit flan instead of cake and a beach party for a reception.

Well congratulations

As implied by HenHappy's post

, make sure you have an indoor alternative if your main plan is for outdoors. Make sure the indoor alternative either has good air conditioning, or LOTS of windows AND FANS available -- a whole buncha people packed into a small space gets awfully hot awfully quickly (thinking back to my wedding, 16 people eating buffet-style in our apartment, sweating to death

)

Also, for outdoors, I suggest having wasp traps on hand. Even if you are not normally a wasp trap kinda person. Again, ask me how I know

Cakewise I second the suggestion of something involving strawberries, if it's July. Otherwise, perhaps a white or lemon or coconut cake. (Ours was carrot cake, but only because that's what my m-i-l decided she was Going To make for us <g>)

You can make nice invitations quite inexpensively by going to a store that sells artsy handmade-type paper and finding something that suits your taste. We had a really nice handmade paper that had leaves and bits of fern etc in it, used as an outer 'card', with a handwritten insert giving the actual invitation info. You could computer print the insert if you preferred, I don't think many people these days run a fingernail over it to check if it's engraved or think poorly of you if it's not

I heartily recommend the small homestyle wedding thing -- we had our ceremony in a local park's greenhouse, reception in our apartment, 16 people including us, my dress was a nice floral print from a dep't store (I was too busy with moving/immigrating things to sew, unfortunately), honeymooned at DH's family's cottage on Georgian Bay, and the total bill for everything came to like $400 or so. Which left us a WHOLE LOT more to spend on a house and land...

Good luck,

Pat

thanks pat. we have a bunch of wasp traps.

I love the card Idea and we can come up with something for the invitations. What about a circus tent kinda thing for outdoors. that way if it rains we are fine?

forgot to add. we only got one song picked out which is "shania twains from this moment" but we need more. We are thinking rascall flatts "god bless this broken road"

There's a really pretty song by John Lennon called "Grow Old With Me". I have it on a Mary Chapin Carpenter CD--Party Doll.

oh, here is something I wish someone had suggested to *us* (although it is quite possible that we are the dumbest people in the world and nobody else has ever had this problem)...

...unless you use some extremely common standardized version of vows, put a copy somewhere you won't lose it. No, really, do
tongue.png

My husband and I have NO IDEA what actual vows we said 5 1/2 years ago. They've gone *poof*. Mostly this is just a running joke between us, but actually I am sort of a little sad that the vows are gone forever and we'll never remember what they were. Plus of course, who knows, they could've contained something useful I could use as leverage when discussing larger chicken coops <vbeg>

Pat

we are going to put our vowes in seperate frames right next to the wedding pics and cake topper

thank you for that advice as I always forget lol

How about a chicken shaped grooms cake? Alot of people do quirky things to reflect their personalities instead of going strictly traditional. I went to a wedding in Dec. where the groom was from Texas and for the reception, they had REAL food and his cake was in the shape of Texas and in the Texas flag colors. I have the brunswick stew recipe, it is outta this world! If it's going to be a country style wedding you could use straw bales for seating. Best of luck to you both!

I love that idea. it would be real messy with a real chicken on top right? lol. Her grandfather is a farmer to so she loves chickens and ducks
