Was candling prior to setting a batch of eggs today and found a detached air cell on an egg laid just yesterday. Also found a few with air cells on, or closer to, the side of the egg instead of on the fat end.

Anyone ever seen this?

Have seen the side cell on a friends eggs once.
Just wondering how this happens and how common it is?
Wondering if all the wonky cells are likely from the same bird.
Egg are all from my 4 CCL's so no telling which bird it might have been.

Just tagging folks I know hatch a lot...but anyone with hatching experience is welcome to reply.

The only ones I've seen that have been more on the side are ones that I missed collecting, and sat in the nest box on their side for a few days, and its still uncommon for me to find one like that. I don't think I've ever gotten a detached one from my own flock. No, I take that back, I did get some from a chocolate orpington, maybe a handful over the couple of years I had them.
So I would say for me, both situations are very uncommon.

I actually don't think the side air cells or detached ones are super uncommon. Reason being, I boil a fair few eggs regularly, and I know that in every batch of 6-12 I do I get at LEAST one, if not two with side air cells. Both store bought and home laid. They stay fat end up in the refrigerator, so either they're side cells or they're detached and go to the side as they steam or boil.

How big are your nest boxes? To get detached air cells, your hens must be playing soccer with those eggs. To be on the side or not exactly on top, isn't that uncommon.
There's not any research that I can find that has been done on the cause for it to happen...it probably has to do with the way the yolk got enveloped by the membrane...:idunnoidk, only other reason for it is that it has set in a particular position for a long period of time but you said these are fresh eggs, so rules that out.
