WEIRD or ODD Eggs pics!!!! :)

Pics
Hardened pus......so a search on 'lash egg'.
How big was it?
Always good to put a coin, quarter or dime, down for scale in pic.

Sorry, for the delay. Had an issue with Update on computer. An inch across about 3 in long. 1st pic, Upper L corner, can see Part of the Apple logo on my MacBook? the hen has been sickly for a while. This egg and a normal one y-day were surprising since she hasn't laid for about 8-9 mo. she gets picked on, but it's decreasing since others have met with a broom. She always seems to need to be dusted, had a REAL issue with that a couple of weeks ago.
No real urgency, just what is recommended.
Googling Lash egg, says a lot but doesn't say what to DO! Have some medicated chick start, can I give her that?

Quote: Wow, that's bigger than most lash eggs IIRC.
There's not much you can do, in most cases....again IIRC, I've not dealt with it myself.

What breed is she?
Why does she frequently need to be dusted?

Medicated chick starter is usually amprolium which is an anti-protozoan to help with coccidiosis immunity, will not help with this kind of infection. An antibiotic might help if you could get lab tests on what kind of bacteria the infection is caused by.

Do a search here on BYC for lash egg...I think there are quite a few threads discussing it.

My daughter is a Ranch level vet tech, have her looking up the Salpingitis. As I recall she's RIR although small enough she maybe a P red. Was given to me by a big operation, maybe 125 chickens, 2 or 3 yrs ago? Poor thing was in a TINY cage.

When I sent a pic of her to my daughter, a couple of mos ago, said she had a mite condition, WHY the chickens play around in the dust/dirt? She used to isolate herself into one of the nesting Boxes, LIKELY HOW she got that way, No Dust baths.
Now she Does get outside, altho she just seems to sit. I've been feeding her away from the others, one on one & she has a separate place to roost. She Seems to be doing better.

Heck, I had a Normal egg from her the day b4 y-day, Been a WHILE! I'm told I need to keep from dusting her for AT LEAST a week b4 I butcher but the poor girl pulls at my heart strings, Can't bring myself to butcher her even for dog/cat food..
Not sure anyone can help, either her OR Me, LOL, but any suggestions would be helpful. Would be terribly off topic but CAN send a recent pic tomorrow.

'Natural' dusting does not always prevent a mite infestation......
...especially if they are the kind of mites that live in the coop structure and only come out to feed on birds at night.
Even 'dusting' the birds(what did you use to treat them?) will not get rid of that kind of mite.

'Big operation' (for eggs?) probably has production hybrids...they are more likely to have reproductive tract issues as they age.
They usually get rid of birds at about 2 years old....so your bird could be 3-4, old for a production bird.

You don't have to eat her, can just euthanize and bury, burn, or toss in woods.
Might be interesting to open her up tho and see what's going on in there,
if you have experience with slaughter and know what would look abnormal, and/or take pics.

This is the stuff I use. GOOD news, she was wandering around today! No egg from her.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Dogs are loose so cannot toss her into the woods, once she's bled out. This time of year, may be able to toss her off on main road, AWAY from folks who have sheep, goats, livestock. Her body would lure coyotes to some poor folk's meat & tatters...

As DRY as it's been NOT going to start a fire, & I haven't a barrel. KNOW local coyotes, my dogs would likely dig her up...

If you look closely at the ingredients on that package I think you'll find it's mostly clays(Calcium Bentonite)...and only a small part DE.
Even 100% DE will not kill a mite or lice infestation.

X2 -- use a "garden and poultry dust" with permethrin which should be easily found at any farm store for around $7 or so.

*** edited to correct per aart and cmom, no withdrawal time with permethrin, sorry!! ***

An alternative is to order some Elector PSP. It's an expensive initial purchase, but is extremely concentrated. It's so concentrated that you only need 9ml (just under 2 teaspoons) for a gallon of water- and just a few squirts with a fly sprayer of that gallon per hen.

Here's a link that has a video of the application and more info.

To avoid the egg withdrawal period associated with permethrin (and the 2nd treatment with the 2nd egg withdrawal period),
I don't believe permethrin has any withdrawal period.
