Weird things only poultry people get.

I'd love to have a rooster at some point, but at the moment I am not able (Not enough space for enough hens and roo) or allowed (By parents or town) to have one. I've heard that the best combination for hens and a roo is starting with some mature hens, and adding a younger roo. Is this true?

I just raise them all together. It helps them become friends easier, and it’s less work.

Ok! I was wondering because I had heard that a cockerel will start mating with the pullets before they know what they're doing, and it just causes stress for everyone.

That’s what’s happening to me right now. It’s a mess, none of them are very happy, but it’ll stop in just a few weeks when the first one should start laying.

At the same time, sometimes the older hens don't accept the young rooster.
One of my older girls is being chased around all the time. By two cockerels.

What can they say, they like the chicks but the chicks don’t always like them back.

I love cockerels, and roosters. My current cockerel is starting to want to mate the pullets, who are in no way interested, but he isn’t aggressive. He actually follows me around and helps me make sure the ladies are okay.

I would say it depends on the male. I have one male that grew up that way bit he doesn't treat the hens any differently than my male's that didn't. However, my male's that didn't are just sweethearts so it might work for more aggressive cockrels

Anyone here give their birds baths? I have to for my fair to get the bugs out and it always looks like I fought a bobcat off afterards
