Sandra & Cheeptrick - I'm selling enough eggs to pay for the feed for my entire flock, so not too shabby. Our flock of 15 free-range about an acre in the daytime, so I"m only buying 50 lbs of layer pellets a month. Buying 100 lbs of chickstarter in that same month tho. Maybe I need to start watching for available birds to pick up.

Plus we get all the eggs we need for the house for free. One less worry anyhow.

LorieMN - We were planning on going up to the state fair this weekend.... but the money didn't come thru.

Hubby is in a "needed field" - trucking; but the manufacturers aren't shipping, so he's not rolling. don't move the truck, don't get paid. Three weeks out of the last 6 he's barely made enough miles to pay the taxes and Health Insurance. But at least he's still employed. The company is having to lay-off drivers.

U know....with the price of oil dropping I think we may be able to stock up on feed and prices will go DOWN. My feed stores are selling bags for $10 right now...I might stock up for the winter!!

If you've got room get it while it is cheep! pun intended!!

I'd had this very thought on getting feed now etc. My girls are still just pullets & on that feed & so I'd need another couple months of that for them & then to switch. How long is the shelf life on the chicken feed?

This kinda gives new meaning to the phrase "it's nothing but chicken feed" huh? Who knew we'd ever be thinking of "stocking up" on chicken feed.... LOL

yes, we are in a depression - caused by money hungry subjects of mortgage lenders and banks. Who will suffer? The middle class which almost don't exist anymore - pushed to the edge of poverty. I am so glad that I am poor with no stocks or bonds or 401 K's - I am retired with a secure European pension. Why in the world can't the government bail out people who are loosing their homes, who were responsible in applying for a mortgage they could afford instead of bailing out AIG - the criminals who caused this world wide spreading disaster because they had international connections?
I will have my chicks, laying eggs in 21 weeks, I have my veggie garden to take care of my vitamin needs, I will put solar panels on my roof to safe energie and, I will ride my bike to be independent on gasoline until some stupid AH is running me over. GOD BLESS AMERICA - we sure need now his blessings.

Well I guess perspective is in order...since Aug '06 I lost my father, husband, two dogs (11 month and 11 yrs) and my job--I still have my family, my health, my faith, and my resolve to survive...Watching this all play out--I say to myself--this is nothing---I've been thru worse...and I get up and go do something constructive cause I have survived my own Depression...

It will get better...

You're right. And I don't think most of us are Shocked Or Surprised. Most of us have been expecting it for months, some of us for years now. Upset? No, just sad that our country is being run by a bunch of greedy deep-pockets, and Me-first bureaucrats.

Our Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves.

RIP to the American Dream

I totally agree with you: somad

We have always been the most respected and looked up to country on Earth, the ones who came to everyone else's aid, and always fought for right and who had the most going on in innovation, creativity, progress and education. It's sad to wonder, what do those countries who looked up to us think now, that there is widespread financial ruin all over the world caused by the panic spread after our leaders and CEOs with their demand for instant gratification and attitude of entitlement and greed have pushed the dominoes over all over the world? Who needs seven homes, and then forgets how many there are??? Sometimes I look at the people runing ur country and it almost seems like a group of Paris Hilton clones are in charge.

Good to know someone is seeing a drop in feed prices-we certainly aren't yet. If they do drop, my mom is getting a whole lot of chicken and rabbit feed stored in her guest bedroom LOL!

I am upset about this like everybody else, however I am really glad that I live in a place where food is right outside our door and we have the means of obtaining it. We invested in a fireplace insert to heat our home with this winter- whew! (even though oil prices are falling now, who knows what will happen in the coming months.) I am mostly worried about my friends who are more "on the grid" than we are...

What exactly is the shelf life on layer pellets and chick starter? It is a great idea to stock up unless they are only good for a few months.....
