Well, today SUCKED.

Mom's folly: Thank you for that info! Do the side effects show up only during when you would normally have your period, or do they stick around all month?

Tanichca and thekid: I'll add that to my list of tricks; thank you.

Chickengal505: What kind of exercise, or just exercise in general?

For me the side effects came and went...and as a young woman that libido thing was sort of a deal breaker....it was the one that didn't work for me...

I've had friends who used the Pill for years, with no other contraceptives, and no problems. It really depends on how your body works, how sensitive you are to hormones, and what you can deal with, and if the payoff is large enough.

I would ask to have an appointment with your doctor or your mom's gyno. Don't let your mom's opinion or experience make YOUR health decisions for you. You are not identical people and will not have identical reactions. There are hormone patches, implants, pills etc....

Also, if you want to talk to the doctor without your mother, you are legally allowed to. If you want to discuss the issue with your doctor without your mother present you only have to ask the doctor. Legally, they have to comply, and they cannot disclose what they talked about unless you say so. Doing otherwise can get their license revoked.

I don't have daughters, so I don't have to deal with this issue. I know that when I was young, my mother never considered taking me to the doctor, because they couldn't do anything for her when she was young. Sometimes parents own issue blind them to their children's issues, and sometimes parents forget that their children aren't the same as them.

I used to go through hell on a monthly basis when I was in my teens and 20s. Now that I'm in my 40s, things are much easier, but for years I had a lot of trouble. It really does suck.

Oral contraceptives have changed drastically over the past couple of decades. There are several low-estrogen formulations available that you could try that tend to produce fewer adverse effects than higher-dose brands (and are thus much more easily tolerated). It really may be beneficial to you to ask your GYN or primary care provider about giving one a try, as they can help regulate things. Adverse effects (side effects in pharmacist-speak) can occur with pretty much anything, and are definitely common on new starts with any formulation of the Pill. It may take as long as a cycle or two for your body to adjust fully to having the new hormones on board, but once you're acclimated to them you should be fine. If one brand doesn't work, don't hesitate to ask for a trial of another - we have a lot of options nowadays, and you shouldn't have to suffer.

*disclaimer - I am a pharmacist in meatspace, but I don't play one on TV. That reference is undoubtedly FAR too old for a lot of folks on here!

You can try the pill and see how you feel, give it 3-4 months before switching to a different type. You could also go the non hormonal way and get a script for 800mg IBprofen (1 pill instead of 4 pills is better for you liver, something about the formulations)

I take Midol when I start feeling fat and that I could go on a rampage at the drop of a hat.. to me the preliminary nonsense is worse than the thing itself. With the midol multi-symptom for the week before and the 800 mg IBprofen for the first 2 days... I can continue with normal life easy enough.

Otherwise you'll find me wrapped up in a blanket watching Gone With The Wind 7 times in a row completely incapable of doing anything.

The pill makes me fat and I'm also worried about side effects when they come out with new formulations. Hormonal things scare me, but it's all in how your specific person reacts to them. I don't react that well. You might.

I try to stay away from anything I need to take every day for potentially the rest of my life, or child bearing years.

You can treat the cause (the pill).

Or treat the symptoms.

Either way, it's worth a chat with the Dr.

Also, eat Bananas, move around (lying in a ball on the couch is actually going to make it worse) and eat foods rich in Iron, Potassium, calcium. Always, ALWAYS keep supplies in your purse along with single serving packs of meds. You can get a single 2 pill dosage of most anything to stick in your purse.

I hate it when surprise attacks come along. So weird. Going along about your business thinking you have another week and then BAM! No more fun for you. Sometimes I don't see it coming and then it's there, other times I'm counting down the days as I go through the "OMG I NEED chocolate or I'll kill someone" phase.

Different for everyone, you need to find what works for you. The Doctor is a good place to start. So are Bananas and strawberry Yogurt, with a liter of water to wash down 800 mgs of IBprofen.

What muscle relaxant does she use? I've never used anything except Tylenol, Ibuprofin and the like. And a heating pad, when it gets really bad.

Her "girly doctor" proscribed them for her. She's on birth control, Iron supliments, muscle relaxants, pain releavers, and she's thinking about having her fallopian tubes tied when she gets older to gt rid of her period for good.

I use ibuprofen too. It works pretty well.

I just read that black strap molasses is supposed to do wonders for female issues. I think the dosage is two tablespoons a day. I am definately going to try it. You do need to stop taking multivitamins with iron if you use this though.

Tying her tubes will not stop the period. She'd still ovulate, just wouldn't make it to the uterus. She'd need to have a partial hysterectomy to stop having a period...

I totally remember that type of pain girl... I'd have them down my legs big time! And it literally stopped after I had my first son when I was 31! Now, I only get a head ache.. Its a bad one, but its better than all that other crap. I'd be popping ibuprofen/asprin every 3 hrs for 2 days! Now, I pop excedrin and coffee.

I would talk to my gyno if I were you. Sounds more like you have something more than just menstral cycle problems. If it is that bad, you should consider the shot, or even a pill specifically for treating your menstal symptoms. I wish they had things for it when I was a kid... You shouldn't have to suffer like that every month when there is a way to ease it and make it a NORMAL period..

Walking, Jogging, crunches, sit ups, bike rides. Basiclly anything that uses your abs. Be shure to streach really good first though, And start the exersise a day or so before your period and don't do too much or you'll serously hurt yourself. Don't lift too much or you will ruin yourself. Main thing: Don't push yourself to hard, but do exercise.

I have to say I just wanted to smack the people who told me that exercise would get rid of my craps. They didn't and then the ones who that worked for would act all condescending and nasty. The whole "it can't be that bad" or "must be faking it" get old really fast when you are that sick. And believe you me, vomiting all over your algebra class is really that bad, and can't be faked!
