I was making a tart this afternoon and cracked open an egg from one of my girls, and found these strange little....whatever they are. The white is hard, at first o thought it was some sort of rock or something. The red-brown thing is soft and gooey. (Sorry if this grosses anyone out lol.) Anyone know or have any ideas? Is this normal? Is whoever laid this sick?

It looks like meat spots or sloughing from the reproductive tract. These happen occasionally and are detected in commercial production through candling. They can be occasional or become routine. If routine they may indicate problems with the reproductive tract.

Meat spots as Sourland said. If you have any older hens, you may see these often. They are fine to eat or pick out of the egg before cooking. Since commercial eggs are candled before going to market, most people never see those nowadays.

Ahh, I have a pretty old hen, that’s most likely who it came from. Thanks!
