Silkie Chickens (Farmette 1769)
Silkie Chickens have down-like feathering. They look something like a marshmallow and the Michelin man with legs and a beak. They have black skin and the feathers come in a variety of colors (mainly solid neutrals). There is an up and coming breed called the Showgirl Silkie that is a bizarre version of this. It has a naked neck.

A Falcon and a Decision
We had a surprise visitor this week on the Farmette – a falcon graced us with her presence. Luckily she was smaller than our free-ranging rooster. He made it safely to the cover of the bushes. Our other chickens, after screeching up a storm, huddled in the nesting boxes of their coops.

Chicken Health and Rooster Feathers
We noticed some mites on a hen that was getting her injured leg wrapped. They are extremely tiny and easy to miss, but when you see them on your poultry, it is best to deal with the situation as soon as possible. Within the next day or two, one by one, I pulled our birds out of the coops. Each chicken was treated for these nuisance pests.

Early Fall on the Farmette
For a few weeks now, as dusk falls, it has been cooler. We live at the Southern, nearly-middle, point of North Carolina. Our lowered night temperature is in the 40′s – not freezing yet. It is mid-October and the leaves are starting in on their colored dance from tree foliage to ground cover.

It is almost one year since my major surgery. We have been able to get a lot done to reorganize the farmette since then. The work has helped me to build up muscles (including the ones supporting my fused neck) and to retrain all the crushed nerves. Things in that medical arena are far from perfect, but my ability to move is vastly improved in comparison to the two years prior.

Mini Chicken Flock Photo Array
Things on the Farmette change all the time. As we delve further into our experiences in country living, we make more refined decisions about what works for us.
Our poultry is a big concern. We had added lots of different kinds of fowl to the mix. There are no regrets. We have loved having them all and learned a lot from doing so. This year, mainly by attrition as predators such as feral cats, coyote, foxes, and hawks discovered easy pickings in our domesticated bird lot, we have downsized by type.
