I used to wonder about how such little girls could handle them big boys until I gotta thinking about how anything could bleed for a week and not die, pass a baby the size of a bowling ball and snap back back like nothing ever happened. Then I quit wondering, I don't want to know.
I'm just thankful!

Part of the answer as to how the size difference can work is that chicken mating doesn't involve anything penetrative. The two birds just bump their cloacas together. It's the same for all birds- except ducks. Ducks are a, uh, whole other mess.

I have a niederrheiner rooster. I hatched him and another rooster and 4 pullets last year. I lost much of my mixed layer flock to hurricane Irma. I have been trying to find hatching eggs for 2019 spring chicks. Would you have some to sell? I have gotten some beautiful mixes from my niederrheiner.

Dixie Rainbow are another giant breed.

I crossed them with a Barred Rock roo to create the Rainbow Rock alongside her.

I never had a Dixie Rainbow rooster but I found this pic of one.

My Rainbow Rock roos are bigger than their Barred Rock father and I am going to mate them back to the Dixie Rainbow hens to create a Rainbow Rock that is 75% Dixie Rainbow and hopefully even larger.

I have read that large breed chickens such as the Jersey Giant can take two years to reach their full size.

If you are able to provide most of the bird's food via free ranging, then the feed bill can be less of an issue and large breeds become really attractive. Those extra-jumbo eggs are fantastic and giant breed birds can provide as much meat as a small turkey.
