What are some pain relievers for ducks that don’t require a prescription?

DMSO is a strong pain reliever. It is applied to the skin and not ingested. I have used it on myself. You can buy it without a prescription. It is in the horse section at Rural King.

I'm so sorry to hear they wouldn't help. Did you try any other vets in your area? you never know may land on one who would be sympathetic. I'm sorry poor thing. . Also you have to consider the big under taking of having a duck without legs, I just read on the emergency thread this morning about a rooster that lost both it's legs to FB but she is going to have this rooster live in her house the rest of it's life. It's a big responsibility. Do you have any idea how this happened?

Yes.

Aflac (an Indian runner duck of mine) hates walking on the snow. He keeps his legs hidden in his down and wiggles like a worms. It's funny to watch. He wants to be outside, but he doesn't want his feet to touch the snow. Silly duck.

So far my call drake is doing the same thing. He wiggles to get to his food and water. I watched him as he wiggled across our entire garage to see his girlfriend. He also uses his wings to help on occasion. I'm sure he'll adapt. The problem is getting him to that point.

If it becomes a problem, I have a friend that keeps her call ducks inside her house and she said she'd be willing to take him.

As far as how this happened, I'm not completely sure. I just got him a little over a week ago. I took him in as rescue knowing ahead of time that his feet were frozen. I believe she said he got stuck in his water dish as the water froze around his legs. Poor boy... I don't blame her at all. Accidents happen.

I keep coming across aloe vera as an analgesic treatment for burns including frostbite. I would try it. You can buy aloe vera gel or liquid at many places that sell supplements and vitamins.

I'd sure try the aloe, and please keep us updated on him, sure hope he makes it through, sounds like you have the plan worked out just getting him through the worst of it all now. Bless you for trying.

Thank-you! I'll look into it.

We have some in our medicine cabinet. I'll look into it and hopefully apply it tonight. Thanks!

I decided to bring him inside the house and make him a sling. This way he doesn't bare any weight on his legs and his feet stay clean. He's looking a bit better than yesterday, but he still has a long ways to go.

That great news! I think having him inside is the way to go especially if your still having very cold temps, at least this way all his energy can be used to get healed and not trying to keep warm. Thanks for update. Maybe when you get time you can post a pic, this way if anyone else might needs some ideas on how to treat they will have a pic.
