My dd and I went to a local vineyard this morning and had a tour and picked grapes and got a lesson of how to make my own jelly from the grapes we picked. We picked about 22 pounds and the lady(she liked us LOL)charged us for fifteen pounds...a dollar a pound was her going rate!
She told me how to hand squeeze the grapes, some folks stomp them...not here though...
so tomorrow I am going to give it a try. The grapes are Sayvol, I think that was the spelling of them. I had never tasted them before and they were amazing and will make up a pretty pale green jelly. I will post pics if it works. LOL
I just made up five half pints of Seyval grape jelly..not sure it will set. I found the recipe for the second jam... 8 half pints of Huckleberry jam after I tried making the Seyvol jelly. but one is a jelly and one is a jam. Still needing a recipe for Seyval jelly if anyone can help me? Or give me a recipe that you use for squishing the grapes and making up jelly?? thanks
Hmm, I don't know if the seeds in the grapes I processed were bitter or not!
The lady at the vineyard told me not to use the seeds as there was something in them. these are high quality wine making grapes, LOL. I am not making wine but want to make jelly from them. I know how to separate the seeds and pulp but not sure as to how to make up the jelly. Do I use the reg. recipe for grape jelly from the juice? that is what I tried this morning but it still hasn't set up. I put Sure Jel in them. Maybe I need to wait longer?? I just went on line and found a recipe for making jelly from seeded grapes, the separation, etc. but it doesn't call for pectin nor does it let you boil the juice? I guess I will just experiment and see what happens here. LOL
A few days ago I made apple butter and today I made peach jam and preserves.
Thirty years ago I bought a Sauce Master/Victorio mesh strainer http://www.preparedpantry.com/victorio-mesh-strainer.aspx and it was probably one of the best investments I've ever made. Makes tomato sauce making a piece of cake and there is a grape spiral removing skins and seeds. I'd highly recommend getting one. I use mine for making apple sauce, tomato sauce, seed free jellies, stringless pumpkin.
