What are you canning now?

I bought them at a bulk foods store ran by the Amish. I buy all my canning supplies at the bulk stores-much cheaper prices!

So are the jars cheaper there too? I assume you are talking like Sam's or Costco?

No I am talking about AMISH stores. not sams or costco. I buy all my jars at estate sales/yard sales-never new so I don't know about that. I have a stockpile of over 400 jars now. They do have hard to find jars though like the new 1/2 gallon jars which I use to make refrigerator pickles. and to store dry goods in. I can buy canning salt in larger quanitites they have it in bags from 10lb to 50lbs and they have all the mixes that MRS WAGES makes plus their own mixes. (FOR MUCH MUCH CHEAPER) I buy most of my basic essentials there like flour, sugar, spices, etc.

Well unfortunately this is not Amish country so I am out of luck. I have been looking at CL and other places for free or cheap jars but not having much luck!!!

I didn't know that you could buy them in bulk until Barefootmom mentioned it. Lehman's has them, but since I had an order going anyway at Amazon, I got them there for $.04 a lid. Much better than $.50 a lid at the grocery store, and always running out!

Lehman's also has those reusable lids. I haven't tried them yet, but I want to.

Can you link to which lids you got at Amazon for .04/lid? Thanks.

Every fall I get my lids on clearance at lowes. They have them for as little as $0.60 a box. Last year, I bought 10 boxes!

I figured out what I did wrong . . ... .
The little pressure release valve on the top of the lid .... .Well, I pushed it down during the cooling off stage BOTH times

I canned some more squash last night and did not touch the valve and my squash looks beautiful!

What kind of canner are you using? You should never mess with the canner in the cooling down stage- ever. That is how explosions happen.

I did 24 half pints of raspberry jam and 4 pints of salsa today. The grocery store had an amazing sale on raspberries. They normally sell for 4.99 for 6 oz but were 10 for 10 this weekend. I bought 30 containers for 30 bucks....if I had paid full price it would have cost me 150 bucks for those pricey little buggers.

Tonight, Dd and I made 8 1/2 pints of blackberry jam . . . .

Our tomatoes are starting to come in, so I am guessing salsa will be next.

Does anyone have a really good CANNING salsa receipe ? ? ?
