What are you canning now?

Well I cut up and froze the rhubarb thanks for the advice it saved me some work for sure.

Arielle - Same here and it was supposed to rain but that didn't happen. Over 100 in the hoop coop though.

Holy I just keep freezing what I can to do up later . it's just to darn hot to cook.

Once I cook with wine too. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

I did a Cranberry wine jelly. Not to bad but since I don't drink it expensive to buy wine when you only need a cup or two. There are some left overs you just can give to the chickens.

Happy what's your recipe for Watermelon jelly. I bought a jar in AL but have yet to open it. I love watermelon and it would be hard to have some for jelly. I can eat a half watermelon by myself. I have a recipe for watermelon jam but its' iffy to get a good tasting watermelon these days. Not like when I was a kid. Now all these seedless tasteless round things.

I froze some peaches for later use. I hope I can get some more raspberries though there are the fall kind aren't there?

Sonew - you don't have a pitter? Or is that with a pitter? Anyone here use a pitter?

So much to do, so little energy.
I posted it here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/78434/what-are-you-canning-now/6750_50#post_9347432

My raspberries produce in spring and fall. Mine are Heritage Raspberries.

Quote: I know what you mean on cleaning! I can never get caught up. House, laundry, chickens, garden, bees, homeschooling my oldest, etc and I've been "trying" to get to washing the car for over a month.

I'm a meanie on the house though. I trained my kids that if their stuff wasn't cleaned up, I'd suck it up with the vacuum. Nothing is more aggravating than trying to vacuum around millions of tiny Lego pieces. I tell them the night before I'm vacuuming to get it all cleaned up. Oh, and I have to get the wash done so I can iron my DH's clothes for his business trip next week.

Holy - with all due respect, I don't believe kids today are any less smart than in the 1800's. I just believe we've come to expect less from them. My point? at age 9 a kid can help out and should. I also believe todays children have a hard time with disappointments because they aren't challenged enough so they don't know how strong they really are.
These days it's not that kids don't grow up fast enough. It's that they never grow up. I have four and Lord have mercy they are still calling for help. DW never made them do anything and now they can't do for themselves. I don't believe kids today are selfish just haven't been taught to be apart of anything and responsible. I worry what will happen to them when we go. Get them to help out and you all can go do something together.
The family that prays together stays together and the family that PLAYS together does too.

Sonew - don't they have a kind that won't turn your hands red? I haven't done cherries but have a good recipe for Sour cherry jam. With this drought I think we'd all better start stocking up. If it gets real bad I might even eat pickles.

Happy - I planted one plant of Heritage, one of Anne (yellow) and a few Boyne. I'm watching CM to see if they go on sale again like last year. I got them for $2 a plant but only 7 of 15 survived. No berries on any of them. It's so dry the wild ones just dried up.
As for kids picking up. I knew a woman who used to keep everything in a box and then charge money them to get it back. Not a fun way to spend your allowance I guess.

That's funny.

My kids help out. My oldest (12) does the dishes and puts away his own laundry, my youngest (9) takes out the trash, sweeps the porches. They both clean their own rooms. (though I still have to go through and clean out the closet once in a while - good opportunity to chuck stuff) When we stack wood, they help. They also help with the chickens, the garden, and the bees. Oh and they will fight over the mopping (all hardwood and tile except bedrooms) so I have 2 mops and let them have at it.

I'd share if we lived a little closer!
That is my favorite pickling book. I got a second copy for Christmas - that is why I put it in the raffle. Great stuff in there. Share what you try out and I will do the same.

I am so sad that I have not had time to put anything by...or even pick the produce to put in the freezer! If I could just get a 1/2 a day at home I could do SOMETHING! Way too busy this Summer - I hear you.

Can I freeze peaches whole the same way I do tomatoes and everything else and them still use them successfully?

Quote: In my experience "farm" kids are an exception to the comments above. I work in a public school system and whole heartedly understand where he is coming from.

My kiddos work (10 & 13) their butts off here compared to alot of their peers. It is up too each family to do what is right for them. I do believe that respect, resposibility and all other morals and values start - or should start - at home. But I hear you...I too worry about the changes I see.

Just found this thread! Hooray!

I am making my first ever salsa as I am new to canning and doing up some blackberry jelly is what got me started.

Until then I was totally afraid of killing off my family by canning.

But I have found a local wild blackberry patch and I saw those berries ripening up and just couldnt let that go to waste.

Now, I just got 15 lbs of beautiful tomatos out of the garden and I can't see them going to waste either and a person can only eat so many dehydrated tomatos! LOL

Wish me luck.

You'll love it!! Very addicting!

With the current drought they say grocery prices will climb...I plan to put by all I can get my hands on as time allows.

Call me lazy or whatever but I justbwent and bought a cherry seeder machine on amazon for 25$.... Load the tray with cherries...and pump handle down for every cherry..back and forth..easier than using my fingers and staining my hands horribly!!!

Ill post a link;)
