WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

Last week (Friday the 23rd) received 18 Black Jersey Giants from Cackle Hatchery. One died about an hour after I got them but the other 17 are doing fine and were started on fermented feed this morning. Here's a couple pics....

I'm calling this one Penguin.

A couple days ago, I ordered some Partridge Cochins from MyPetChicken, but they won't ship until May 19. I figured a broody Cochin hen would be cheaper than an incubator!

I ordered my geese yesterday but they won't ship til June 4th. I was kind of bummed at first but it gives me time to finish my coop/run and get my current houseguests moved.

What is Fermented Food? I got my babies yesterday, they are all so healthy. I am sorry that you lost 2 of yours.

We ordered our 5 girls back in January and just got them 2 days ago.1 Barred rock, 1 Delaware, 1 buff Orpington and 2 golden buff red stars. Fortunately They all made it safe through shipping. They came from my pet chicken and I think I will need an intervention... Can't stop looking and thinking about them, ha!

Three deaths now and still the weak one. I noticed the one that died overnight was standing a bit funny last night. They did send extras, so I have 24 healthy ones and the weak one right now. Lots of baths this morning for pasty butt or to wipe off food, New bedding, food, water, etc. Been doing animal care now for 3 hours and just now got to make my coffee!

I turned the light off momentarily to snap a few pics.

Fermented feed is simply your regular feed put in a bucket with water and let soak for a few days. It gets a sourdough odor, but has many benefits, including:
A) less waste, because it is damp, they can't kick it all out of the dish.
B) less waste, because they actually will eat less of it.
C) more nutrition, because the fermenting process actually releases more of the vitamin content and makes it more available for the digestive system
D) decreases the pH of the bird's digestive system, which gives better immunity to diseases, with a pro-biotic type effect.
E) fatter, healthier chickens with less feed. WIN-WIN!
Go to the Feeding and Watering Your Flock forum, and look for the FERMENTED FEED - who is using thread.

Nice Group of Babies! Looks very clean too. How do you do that? My babies are literally full of ****!

Going to pick up my chicks in 2 hours! So excited! I ordered 3 Golden Laced Wyandottes from a local 4H club but I am going to see if I can swap out a couple for Barred Rocks.
