WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

Well, yes - it is dry poop on their butts, but if it gets to the point it blocks the vent, it can represent a major health risk. This is why you see it get so much attention from folks with new chicks.
There are many posts on the subject here and great detail about how to diagnose and/or treat it. Search "pasty butt" or "blocked vent."

I'm not sure what the "egg remedy" is.

What is pasty butt? Is it when they have dry poop on their butts? And how do you treat it naturally with eggs
try using dirt.. i heard naturally it helps.. just pull up some dirt with grass and roots from your yard and put it inside your brooder box..i did that the second day and now i bring in some sand every day and put it in with my chicks and give them some oats grinded up.. havent had a pasty butt since the first day.

We just ordered 8 Buff Orpingtons and 7 Barred Plymouth Rocks and should get them April 18th. We are also first timers and really excited! We just ordered them from Mt Healthy. We live in Maine and want cold hardy and docile hens. Saw a great post that they were going to photo document their experience. We might also!

Thanks so much! We have wanted chickens for a few years and are finally able to get them.We went to Tractor Supply and that is who they order from. The chicks all looked healthy so we went online and looked and ordered with a ship date ofApril 16th. We are so pleased that this forum is available with such knowledgeable people!

I'm waiting on my very first order of chicks to be shipped May 19th. My white Cochin, gold laced Wyandotte, black Australorp, and a buff Orpington. I'm getting the coop plans together and breaking ground on a coop with run in my backyard next weekend. I ordered from backyardchickens.com.

I am currently on the wait list at Ideal Poultry for some Buckeye chicks. I am expecting to get 9 pullets and a rooster. The chicks aren't supposed to be ready until sometime in May. Using the time to build my coup, gather supplies and information. I haven't had chickens since I was a kid, many, many moons ago.

It's an awesome time of year.

We are completely new to chickens and just received our chicks from MPC on Weds. We have (all named by various members of the household, hence the variability in names!):
1 Light Brahma (HotWings)
1 Dark Brahma (Nugget)
1 Golden Laced Wyandotte (Valentina)
1 Barred Plymouth Rock (Zebra)
1 Blue Silkie (unnamed)
1 Cream/White (not quite sure yet) Silkie (unnamed)
1 White Crested Black Polish (Disco)

sadly we had 3 losses (and our neighbors who shared our order had one loss). We lost our EE Bantam, our White Sultan, and our mystery bird (she was an assorted rare breed) who had feathered feet, but I wasn't even able to identify before she died. Very very sad about the losses. I think we live too far away and it was too early in the season - lesson learned. BUT the remaining gang look super robust and vigorous thankfully.

We have since been down to the local feed store and added 3 birds to replace the lost, and got:
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte (Isabella)
1 black Turken (Heeby)
1 buff Turken (Jeeby)

I am in love with them all! The Barred Plymouth Rock is the peckiest and will peck at us as soon as we put our hands in there. Hope that isn't a sign that she is a he or something!
