What Are Your Chickens Named After?

Our barred rocks are named after the Velociraptors from Jurassic World. The Austrlorps are Thelma and Louise, the Jersey Giant is Jersey. Three are named after flowers, the rest are a bit random and include Little Britches and Marshymallow.

Mine are simply named after their breeds: CA White is Whitey, Dominique is Dominique, EE is Ameraucana, Russian Orloff is Orloff, and Speckled Sussex is Sussex.

I might like to do some harry potter names....Once I can get a lot of birds I'll definitely name one set Luna, Ginny, Padma, Parvati, Minerva, Hermione, Molly...you get the picture.

I just wondered what everybody else is naming their chickens after, such as favorite TV show characters, food items, etc. I named my first group of hens names that all end with the letter a, and my second group is named mostly after anime characters. Lol, show me your best names!

I've been naming chickens for years, so I have a lot!

Baby chick appearance: Caterpillar, Beetle, Eagle, Panda, Penguin, Goldy, Snowy, Phantom, Moth, Powder, Honey, Molasses

Adult appearance: Spot, Sky (blue), Bulgy (comb shape), Weisskopf (means white-head)

Same-letter theme: Panda, Penguin, Piper, Pocket, Pudding (notice that the second letters all differ--that was deliberate.)

Nuts: Hazel, Almond, Pecan, Pistachio, Peanut, Chestnut

Punctuation: Semicolon, Colon, Comma, Period

Spices/foods: Cinnamon, Cloves, Chipotle, Coffee, Pancake, Honey, Molasses, Snickerdoodle

Variant of breed name: Sally the Sultan, Connie the Ancona, Pancake the Buttercup

Specific traits: Biter, Scraggly, Maximus & Minimus (big & little), Toe (was missing a toe)

Within a theme, my names often have something to do with the appearance of the chicken (or sometimes the behavior or the breed name). That makes them easier to remember.

For example, a chicken who acted nutty became Hazel, then of course the one with green legs was Pistachio, the little bantam was Peanut, the red one was Chestnut, the light brown one was Almond, and the last one became Pecan just to fit the theme.

The Buckeyes are named after trees (Cypress, Butternut, etc), the EEs are named after herbs/spices, and the Marans all have French women's names!

Right now, we have Lu- names: Lucy and Luna. Luna is named after Luna Lovegood - and because she's kind of a loon. We also had Charlotte LaBuff - Buff Orpington named after the Princess and the Frog character. Totally not because the 4 year old who named her watched the movie the day before, lol

My hen friend is called Bandia Sicín which is Irish Gaelic for Chicken Goddess. (I'm a transplant from the north of Ireland, but my da's people are all from a western Gaeltacht)

She named herself, of course. I was going to call her Esmeralda! ☺

We named roosters after civil war generals. Grant, Lee, Stuart, Custer, Sherman, Beauregard. Not sure why but our roosters keep a tight ship, so it made us think of generals!
