What are your five favorite breeds and why

1. Russian Orloff - I love their beards, muffs and crazy long necks. They have such an inquisitive personality and they alway look angry! I love their orloff brow! Also, Im not going to complain about winter eggs. They lay pretty consistently.
2. Modern Game Bantam - Chicken nuggets on stilts. Sweet birds too, I have a pair and I cannot get over my cockerels crow.
3. Mottled Houdan - They look silly and run like they're having a seizure. But once tamed super friendly.
4. Cuckoo Bluebar - super fluffy and cuddles, beautiful eggs too
5. Cochin bantam - fluffy popcorn ball chicken! I love watching them runView attachment 1627124 View attachment 1627125 View attachment 1627126
I saw a bunch of Orloffs today. Gorgeous!

I went to a poultry show today and honestly loved all the breeds of birds, but I was so happy to come home to mine!

My Faves:
1. Dutch! Soooo sweet and beautiful! My girls always look like they’re smiling! Great fliers! My cockerel is very tame and courageous. They make amazing sounds/noises!

2. D’Uccle! Gentle, social, cuddly and so beautiful! A bit more flighty than Dutch but seem very intelligent. Great at flying and also make wonderful and unique noises! My cockerel looks like a cowboy!

3. Sebrights! Enchanting and proud. Live on their terms. Beautiful and very athletic. Total characters! How are they always clean?! I love how social and antisocial they can be! They are true artists!

4. Rosecombs! Mine are just so darn sweet!! Everyone’s friends, much like the D’Uccles. Courageous for such refined birds. Love to fly and cuddle.

5. Cochin Bantams! They have been described so well in this thread. They’re just fabulous. Round fluff balls! Teletubbies! Mine are all named after hobbits. Very memorable and fun!

This thread makes me want to know more about Barnevelders, Marans and Dorkings! Sweet birds are my favorites! I got to hold 3 Barbu D’Anver girls today at a show and I LOVED those! I’m really wanting the Euskal Oiloa Marraduna chickens, too.... I do really love all the varieties... Snake chickens, Modern, Silkies... they are all wonderful. And for ducks I love Call ducks and Runners:wee:wee:wee:wee:wee:wee

Hard to specify just 5 but here goes:

1. Barred Rock - of our 17 hens, our one BR (Dotty) is top hen. I've had 3 Barred Rocks in total. They have the biggest personalities, in a great way. They are intensely curious, and involved in everything. Of the other two in my first flock, Hattie got her name because her favorite place to sit was on my head. And Ruckus was a @#$^ disturber - would run through a flock of perfectly quiet birds and get them all stirred up - then when they were all in a huff, she'd sit back and watch them. Very consistent, high egg production.

2. Speckled Sussex - these beautiful, uniquely colored birds are SO friendly and interactive. My favorite buddies in the chicken pen. They are little "sprites"! Follow me everywhere, and as soon as I stop Sophia is in my lap. Eggselent egg producers

3. Cochin - big beautiful cuddly fluff-balls. We have 2 white and 1 blue. Penny the blue is the most beautiful hen in our flock, and she seems to know it. Farrah Faucet and Princess Leah are just quiet and lovely. Better egg producers than I expected.

4. Wyandotte - these are such beautiful birds. Wynona and Whinnie are inquisitive, lovely gals. They are always present, but never stirring up any trouble. High quality eye candy and great egg producers. I REALLY want to add a few blue laced reds!

5. Cuckoo Maran - I had intented to get coppers but the cuckoo was available so I got Cookie. She produces gorgeous dark brown eggs daily, and has a marvelous disposition. I'm so glad I ended up getting her.

6. Oh, i was supposed to stop at 5. But then I couldn't mention my Americana (bummer that she produces cream colored eggs, but that beard and muff and delightful curious personality - how could I not mention Cheeky?). Or what about the gorgeous Barnevelder - Brownie? Or the lovely quiet big girls - the 4 Brahmas? Or the Buff Orpingtons from my first flock - friendliest ever producing daily eggs all year.

I LOVE chickens. I'd love to try more breeds. I have yet to be disappointed with any breeds I've tried yet.
