I'm going to be leaving "Acorn Acres" sometime this spring ( :fl ), I'm taking the Next Big Step; getting a 'new' house and moving in with my GF of by then it will be nearly two years. Being able to keep chickens is of course on the list of "must haves".

I'm going to start with all new chicks, I'm thinking three or four, partly because I won't have any place to house my current flock as my coop is too big to move and I won't have a place to keep them until I can build up a new one. And ten hens will be a bit much for just two people, especially when one isn't that fond of eggs... So I'll be trying to re-home my current harem of ladies. Also, she is a bit afraid of chickens, but fortunately adores cute, fluffy little baby chicks so hopefully I can use that to break her of her phobia.:jumpy

I'm also planning on taking an Alaskan cruise this summer, it will be the second anniversary of our "first contact". Since I cannot care for growing chicks and go on a cruise at the same time (somehow I doubt Princess will let be bring them along, either) I'm going to have to wait before starting anew.

No lab testing here. :) I'm technically just assuming Marek's due to changes in eye color on an OEGB hen. I suppose even if it hasn't been confirmed that the flock is infected, I should still bring it up out of courtesy.

Hi! My poultry resolutions are as follows...
1. Join BYC (done!)
2. Build a brooder (done!)
3. Get my chicks! (They are due at the end of February!)
4. Build a coop and run for them!
5. Getting to write a fun narrative about the life and adventures of my Chickens!
6. Getting eggs from my backyard!
7. Making some friends here.
8. Seeing how my gardening can be beneficial for both my flock and garden!
 
Talk to the poultry buyer at the local Bomgaars to see what breeds she is planning to have for sale this spring from Hoover's Hatchery -- so I know when my resolve NOT to buy more chicks will be the weakest.

Try NOT to ask the 4-H family that gets its chicks from Murray McMurray (which is in the next county) which birds they aren't taking to the fair and would like to rehome -- last year I got a blue-laced red Wyandotte and two cochin bantams, all laying already, for a total of $10).

(Who am I trying to kid? I have already figured out where there is space for more birds).

Build two runs and repair one other so daytime free-rangers have more "play space" since no one is allowed to run free when there is no one home to keep an eye on them.
 
1. Reduce current flock by up to 8 Birds. Might go to a livestock auction, might send to freezer camp. Some unwanted breeds, some unwanted cockerels.

2. Complete roof on run.

3. Rebuild current nest boxes.

4. Build a coop/ run area for raising meat birds.

4. Raise 2 batches of meat chickens (12-18 each time). Our first batch was so good, it was worth the effort.

5. Get more chicks, a variety of breeds to better determine what we like. So far we seem to like the regular to larger size birds, and a variety of egg colors.

6. Kid will participate in 4-H and the county fair.
